According to sources familiar with the\u200c matter, the department will cancel oil\u2064 and gas leases in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-environmental-fight-putting-lives-at-risk-in-alaskas-perilous-king-cove\/\" title=\"The Environmental Fight Putting Lives at Risk in Alaska\u2019s Perilous King Cove\">federal wildlife refuge<\/a> that \u2064were hastily purchased by an Alaska state development agency during\u2063 the final \u200bdays of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>The Alaska Industrial\u2063 Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) managed to secure seven leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge just one day before President \u200dJoe Biden&#8217;s inauguration. Biden had made a promise to protect this vast 19.6 million-acre habitat, which is home to polar bears \u200cand caribou.<\/p>\n<p>While Interior and AIDEA officials have not yet commented on the matter, this move is part \u200bof Biden&#8217;s broader agenda to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-goes-full-green-new-deal-tyrant-carbon-emissions-threaten-the-very-existence-of-our-planet-video\/\" title=\"Biden Goes Full Green New Deal Tyrant: Carbon Emissions Threaten \u201cthe Very Existence of our Planet\u201d (VIDEO)\">combat climate change<\/a> by reining in oil and gas activities on public \u2063lands.<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In January 2021, the Interior Department, under the Trump administration, sold leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge despite objections from environmentalists and \u2062indigenous groups.<\/li>\n<li>A tax bill passed by Republicans in\u2062 2017 opened \u200dthe area to oil and gas leasing and mandated two lease sales by December 2024.<\/li>\n<li>The 2021\u200d lease sale generated only $14 million in high bids, mostly from AIDEA, as the oil and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-to-cancel-trumps-oil-drilling-leases-in-alaska\/\" title=\"Biden to revoke Trump's Alaska oil drilling leases.\">gas industry showed limited interest<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Following the lease sale, Biden&#8217;s administration suspended the leases pending an environmental review.
