Kathleen Riebe in Utah\u2019s\u2064 Nov. 21 special general election\u2014a matchup that favors the Republican\u2064 given the\u2064 district\u2019s status as \u200ba GOP \u200bstronghold.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Rhode Island\u2019s heavily Democratic 1st Congressional\u2064 District, former White House aide Gabe Amo emerged victorious from a \u2064crowded field of nearly a dozen Democrats \u2062hoping to claim former Democratic Rep. David Cicilline\u2019s vacant seat.<\/p>\n<p>After serving\u2064 more than\u2064 12 \u200cyears \u200din Congress, Mr. Cicilline stepped down in June to become the president \u200cand CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In Tuesday\u2019s primary, Mr. Amo raked in 32 percent of the vote as of 9 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    In November, he will aim to defeat \u200dU.S. Marine Corps veteran Gerry Leonard, the Republican political newcomer who bested second-place candidate, former Middletown Town Councilor Terri Flynn, in\u2062 the GOP primary by winning 75.8 percent \u2064of the vote.<br \/>\n  \u200d<\/p>\n<h2>Rhode Island Rivals<\/h2>\n<p>    \u200dHeading\u200c into Tuesday\u2019s election, the presumed Democratic frontrunners for Rhode \u200cIsland\u2019s empty congressional seat \u200bwere Rhode Island Lt. \u2064Gov. Sabina Matos, \u2064former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg, state Sen. Sandra Cano, and Mr.\u2062 Amo.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ms. Matos, \u200cwho was born in the Dominican Republic, received backlash when \u2064she was accused of filling \u2063out her nomination papers with the names of dead people and forging others\u2019 names.<\/p>\n<p>While noting \u200cthat many of the signatures\u200b had proven invalid, the Rhode Island Board of\u200b Elections said it found\u200b \u201cno obvious pattern of fraud\u201d in its review.<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Ms. Matos said she\u2062 would vote to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-gun-policies-concern-second-amendment-advocates\/\" title=\"Biden gun policies concern Second Amendment advocates\">ban assault weapons<\/a> and support pro-abortion legislation while aiming to make Rhode Island a leader in offshore\u200c wind energy.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mr. Regunberg sought to position himself as the \u200cmost progressive candidate, securing the \u200bsupport of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and actress Jane Fonda. He focused his platform on\u2063 combating big business and the country\u2019s\u2063 \u201ccost of living crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Cano, a Colombian immigrant, said \u200dshe favored\u2064 a \u201cwealth tax\u201d and raising the minimum wage to $15, with future increases tied to the rate of inflation.<\/p>\n<p>And Mr. Amo, the son of Ghanaian and Liberian \u2063immigrants, said he would work to \u2064codify Roe v. Wade, ban assault weapons, protect \u200bSocial Security and Medicare from spending cuts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-goes-full-green-new-deal-tyrant-carbon-emissions-threaten-the-very-existence-of-our-planet-video\/\" title=\"Biden Goes Full Green New Deal Tyrant: Carbon Emissions Threaten \u201cthe Very Existence of our Planet\u201d (VIDEO)\">combat climate change<\/a>.\u200b His bid\u200c was\u2062 backed by former Democratic Rep.\u2062 Patrick Kennedy, who represented \u2063the district \u200bfrom 1995 to 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 Republican field was comparatively sparse with just two candidates in the race.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Flynn focused her platform on lowering the cost of living, boosting energy independence, and\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utah-rhode-island-voters-select-nominees-for-congressional-contests\/\" title=\"Utah and Rhode Island voters choose candidates for Congress.\">supporting domestic energy production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mr. \u200cLeonard criticized President Joe Biden\u2019s economic policies.
