8\/22\/2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEleven percent is very good news, and\u200d more\u2063 than doubled what we \u200bexpected,\u201d SUNY Orange \u200dPresident Kristine \u200bYoung told The Epoch Times on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been \u2062talking \u200cwith faculty this week, and a \u200clot\u2063 of them said to me, \u2018My classes are full,\u2019 or\u2062 \u2018I \u2064let a couple extra students into my classes,\u2019\u201d she \u2063said. \u201cSo it feels like students \u2063are coming \u200bback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of the enrollment increase can be\u200c attributed to the ongoing efforts \u200dto retain\u200d existing students and attract new ones, according to Ms. \u200cYoung.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing students increased by \u200c <strong>8 percent<\/strong>, while first-time students jumped by <strong>28 percent<\/strong> this\u2064 fall.<\/p>\n<p>SUNY Orange is one of \u200dthe \u200cfirst 10 community colleges in \u2063the state university system to \u200dparticipate in \u2062the Guided\u2062 Pathways program, \u200bdesigned to\u2064 help students identify and\u200b stay\u2062 focused \u200don their chosen career tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a student comes in, we think about their academic program from the very beginning to the very end,\u201d she said. \u201cEvery student \u200cis \u200dpart of an academic community and\u200c has access \u2064to \u200ba \u200dcoach who can help \u200bthem find resources they need on their\u2064 journey here, be it tutoring, mental health,\u200d and food pantry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:267px\" class=\"alignleft\"><figcaption>SUNY Orange President Kristine \u200dYoung (Courtesy of\u200b SUNY Orange)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The college has also been running\u2064 a student success center in the library that provides core services under one roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of\u2064 our students live here, and they might come to the campus \u2062just long enough to go to their class and \u2064then maybe go \u200cto a job or\u2063 watch their own children,\u201d \u2062Ms. Young said. \u201cWith a student success center, a student really only has to\u200c go to one place and say, \u2018I \u2062need \u2062help.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2064 keep challenging ourselves as a college to\u200d design \u200beverything we do\u200b around the \u2062students instead of \u2062designing it for ourselves,\u201d\u2062 she\u2062 added.<\/p>\n<p>The college has also been using federal grant \u200bmoney to make \u2062its services more welcoming to Hispanic students, who account for about a quarter of its student body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Hispanic families, \u200dwhen \u200da student\u2063 chooses to go to \u2064college, it is very important \u2062for the whole family to be involved,\u201d Ms. Young said. \u201cThat\u2019s where \u200dwe got the idea to do\u200c a \u2064family orientation.
