Trump. Mr. Nordean was sentenced \u2063to 18 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/proud-boys-leader-joseph-biggs-sentenced-to-17-years-in-prison-for-jan-6-crimes-5484212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph\u200b Biggs<\/a> 17 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/proud-boys-leader-joseph-biggs-sentenced-to-17-years-in-prison-for-jan-6-crimes-5484212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zachary Rehl<\/a> 15 years, and \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/proud-boys-lieutenant-dominic-pezzola-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison-for-jan-6-post-5485013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominic Pezzola<\/a> 10 years.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Federal prosecutors <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23937463\/enrique-tarrio-sentencing-memorandum-by-usdoj.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sought a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-proud-boys-could-see-record-prison-sentences-for-jan-6-capitol-riot\/\" title=\"Five Proud Boys face potential record prison sentences for their involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.\">33-year prison term<\/a><\/a> \u2062for \u2063Mr. Tarrio, described in \u200ccourt documents as a \u201cnaturally charismatic leader, a savvy propagandist, \u200cand the celebrity chairman of\u200d the national Proud Boys organization.\u201d Prosecutors claimed he exhibited &#8220;pernicious, violence-oriented leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During a nearly four-hour sentencing hearing, defense attorneys said 15 years would be a sufficient prison term.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Tarrio expressed remorse for Jan. 6, \u200bfor letting down his grandfather and his family, and\u200c for not respecting\u200c law \u200denforcement.<\/p>\n<p>He asked the\u2064 judge for leniency so he\u2064 could return to society and turn away from &#8220;my selfish \u200cendeavors.&#8221; Mr. Tarrio said the trial has humbled him and he no longer wants anything to \u2063do \u200dwith rallies or politics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2064 am not a political zealot,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Calling seditious conspiracy a &#8220;serious offense,&#8221; Judge Kelly said Mr. Tarrio was the &#8220;ultimate leader&#8221;\u200d of the conspiracy who schemed to have government\u200d buildings taken over on Jan. 6. What happened that day was a &#8220;disgrace,&#8221; the judge\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Mr. Tarrio \u200dwas not physically present in Washington on Jan. 6, Judge Kelly applied a sentence enhancement for terrorism based on the attack on \u200bCapitol fencing by Mr. Biggs and Mr. Nordean. (Eva Marie Uzcategui\/AFP\u2064 via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On May 4, Mr. Tarrio was found guilty by a jury of seditious conspiracy, \u200cconspiracy \u2063to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of\u200d an official proceeding, \u2064conspiracy to use force, intimidation, or threat to prevent officers of the United States from discharging their duties, interference with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">law enforcement<\/a> during civil disorder, \u2064and\u200c destruction of government property.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Tarrio was found not guilty of\u200b assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. The jury could not reach a \u2064verdict on two other\u200c counts.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the Oath Keepers put on trial in 2022 and \u200d2023, Mr. Tarrio was accused of plotting to thwart the \u201cpeaceful transfer of power\u201d\u2064 from\u200b President Donald\u2064 J. Trump to Joseph Biden Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Defense\u200c attorney Sabino Jauregui \u2062rejected the idea his client is \u2062a terrorist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My \u2063client is no terrorist,&#8221; Mr. Jauregui said, instead describing Mr. Tarrio \u200cas a &#8220;misguided patriot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Mulroe \u200ddisagreed, describing Jan. 6 as a &#8220;calculated act of terrorism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although Mr. Tarrio \u2063was not \u2062in\u2064 the District\u200c of\u200b Columbia on Jan. 6, prosecutors alleged he communicated with the Proud Boys using\u200b social \u2064media, encouraging them\u200b with references to \u201c1776\u201d and \u200bwarning that elected officials better listen \u201cbecause \u200bthings can get \u200cugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors\u200d said Mr. Tarrio had been \u201cconsumed \u2062with revolution\u201d in the weeks leading up \u2063to Jan. 6. They said he received a document titled \u201c1776 Returns\u201d from\u2064 a girlfriend.\u200c However, defense \u2062attorneys insisted there was no evidence\u200b Mr. Tarrio ever read the document.<\/p>\n<p>He is deserving\u200b of a\u200c terrorism sentence enhancement, prosecutors argued, due in part to organizing the \u201cMinistry of Self Defense\u201d (MOSD)\u2014which was \u201cthe primary instrument through which the defendants planned and\u2064 prepared for January 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In their <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23937468\/sentencing-memorandum-by-henry-enrique-tarrio.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentencing memorandum,<\/a> defense attorneys Nayib Hassan and Mr. Jauregui criticized the DOJ for recommending an \u201cupward departure\u201d in sentencing for alleged terrorism.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They said Mr. Tarrio was an hour away in Baltimore during the Jan. 6 events and did not direct, \u200corder, or plan \u200dProud\u2062 Boys actions that\u200b day. (Chandan Khanna\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They cited a February 2021 interview with CNN in which\u200b Mr. Tarrio said the Proud Boys \u201cshould \u200dnot have breached the \u200bCapitol with \u200bviolence.\u201d Mr. Tarrio was particularly critical of his\u2063 co-defendant, \u200bMr. Pezzola, whom he condemned for smashing a Capitol window with\u200b a \u200bpolice riot \u200dshield.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cI think it \u200bwas completely wrong,\u201d Mr. Tarrio said.<\/p>\n<h2>Didn\u2019t Lead on \u200cJan. 6<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAll these comments made shortly\u200c after the event show he not only \u200ddid not plan the invasion of the Capitol but are \u200dalso\u200c indicative of someone who did not \u200dlead, organize, or manage the actions on January 6, despite having a leadership role within the Proud Boys organization,\u201d\u200d the\u2064 sentencing memo read.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prosecutors cited other statements Mr. Tarrio made to counter that assertion, including, \u201cDon\u2019t [expletive] tread on us,\u201d \u201cNever apologize. You are the resistance. Never stop fighting,\u201d \u201c[Expletive] the system,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m \u200cnot denouncing [expletive].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmplifying his portrayal of the \u200bfederal government as the enemy of the people, \u200bTarrio scorned the \u2062legitimacy of its efforts to investigate what \u2062was self-evidently a\u2062 serious crime, calling law enforcement authorities &#8216;Gestapo forces,\u2019 and\u200b describing suspects as being \u200b\u2018hunted by the tyrannical government,\u2019\u201d prosecutors wrote.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Members of the Proud Boys and Chairman Enrique Tarrio, holding a \u200bmegaphone, along with other demonstrators march across the Hawthorne Bridge during a rally in\u200b Portland, Ore., on Aug. 17, 2019.
