Beaudoin \u200bwas struck by metal pieces when her 2015\u2063 Chevrolet Traverse SUV was involved in a minor crash that took \u2062her life \u2064in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also stated that \u2064there have been seven additional non-fatal \u200binjuries due \u2062to the airbag inflators.<\/p>\n<p>According to NHTSA data, \u2063the \u2062problematic air bag systems are installed in automobiles made by Ford, GM, Stellantis, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen from models made in 2000 to 2018. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><h3>\u201cThese airbag inflators may rupture when the vehicle\u2019s air bag is \u2063commanded to \u200cdeploy, causing metal debris \u2062to be \u200bforcefully \u200dejected into the passenger compartment of the vehicle,\u201d the agency wrote in an initial decision document. \u201cA rupturing air bag inflator poses an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants.\u201d <\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>NHTSA \u200dinvestigators claimed that the issue was generated by the inflators due\u2063 to a \u201cwelding problem\u201d by ARC and Delphi. <\/p>\n<p>They expressed that \u2063employees working at both businesses potentially \u2062created a \u2064\u201cweld slag\u201d throughout\u200b the manufacturing process, which is\u200d the cause of clogged vents inside the\u2063 inflator canister. With\u200b the\u2063 airbags supposedly being defective, the pressure can grow to the point \u200cwhere the canister is blown apart.<\/p>\n<p>In May, NHTSA allegedly requested ARC to recall their airbag \u200binflators, however, the company declined. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, ARC \u200ddenied the speculation that its products\u200d are defective\u200d and mentioned that any issues regarding the airbags result \u201cfrom \u200drandom \u2018one-off\u2019 manufacturing anomalies that were properly addressed\u201d with single recalls.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><h3>\u201cAir bag inflators that project metal fragments into vehicle occupants, rather than properly inflating \u2064the attached air bag, create \u200dan unreasonable risk of death and injury,\u201d Stephen Ridella, director of NHTSA\u2019s Office of Defects\u2062 Investigation, explained in a letter to \u2063ARC.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However,\u200c ARC maintains that there are \u2062no safety\u2062 flaws, that the \u2062NHTSA lacks the jurisdiction to require a component manufacturer\u2064 to issue recalls, and that the agency\u2019s demand \u2062is rooted in speculation rather than technical findings.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><h3>\u201cAn airbag inflator that fails by rupture not only\u200d does not \u2063perform its job as a safety device, but instead actively threatens injury or death, even in a crash where the vehicle occupants would\u2062 otherwise have been\u200b unharmed,\u201d the NHTSA announced.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u200cagency wishes for ARC \u2064to recall at least twelve different automakers\u2019 inflators used in driver and passenger front \u2062air bags. \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>A comprehensive\u200d list of vehicle models with the \u200dkind of airbag inflators\u200d that\u2062 have exploded has not been made public by either ARC or\u2062 the car industry.\u200b However, it \u200bis estimated that at least 25 million\u2063 of the 284 million automobiles on American roads and highways are believed to contain\u2063 them.<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA officials scheduled a \u200cpublic hearing \u2062for October 5<sup>th <\/sup>and will later have the ability to seek a court-ordered recall.<\/p>\n<p>Stay\u200d informed!
