In an exclusive interview\u200b with\u200d The Epoch Times outside the courtroom, Navarro\u200b stated, &#8220;Let&#8217;s let the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-a-child-is-born-with-three-legal-dads-proving-yet-again-that-the-slippery-slope-is-real\/\" title=\"WALSH: A Child Is Born With Three Legal \u2018Dads,\u2019 Proving Yet Again That The Slippery Slope Is Real\">process play<\/a>\u200b out here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200c DOJ isn&#8217;t interested in offering him a plea deal,&#8221; Navarro added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Jury Selection Begins<\/h3>\n<p>Navarro&#8217;s\u200c comments came as\u200c the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ex-trump-aide-navarro-says-government-doesnt-want-to-offer-plea-deal-in-contempt-case\/\" title=\"Navarro: Gov't Refuses Plea Deal in Contempt Case\">jury \u200cselection process commenced<\/a> on the first day of his trial\u2064 at\u2064 the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The \u2064former White House trade adviser is facing two misdemeanor\u200d counts\u2063 of contempt\u200c of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the\u2064 day, 14 jurors had been\u200b selected, \u200dwith 12 expected\u200b to hear the\u2064 case \u200dand the\u200c remaining two serving as alternates.<\/p>\n<h3>Indicted for Contempt of Congress<\/h3>\n<p>Navarro was indicted for \u200ccontempt of Congress\u2062 in June 2022 after failing to\u2062 comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 Select Committee. \u200cHe \u2063pleaded not guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 committee was investigating the security\u200b breach at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, \u200d2021,\u2064 which caused a delay in the certification of the 2020\u2062 presidential \u200belection. They sought to question Navarro \u2063about his book, where \u200bhe outlined a plan \u2062to delay\u200c the certification of Joe Biden as\u200c the winner of the\u200d election.<\/p>\n<p>The charges were referred\u200b to the U.S. Department of Justice, and Attorney General Merrick Garland decided to pursue the \u200bcase in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/army-vet-plans-to-appeal-ninth-circuit-ruling-against-gun-carry\/\" title=\"Army Vet Plans to Appeal Ninth Circuit Ruling Against Gun Carry\">federal court system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversial\u200d Congressional Committee<\/h3>\n<p>The congressional committee has \u200dfaced criticism for being one-sided and politically motivated.\u2064 They subpoenaed several former White House \u200caides, including Navarro and Steve\u200c Bannon.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2022, Bannon was found guilty \u2063of contempt of Congress and sentenced to four months in prison. Navarro, like others in Trump&#8217;s circle, argued that his communications with\u200c the former \u2064president \u2064were protected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-complains-about-fox-news-chyrons-regarding-biden-ignoring-networks-own-chyrons-during-trump\/\" title=\"CNN Complains About Fox News Chyrons Regarding Biden, Ignoring Network\u2019s Own Chyrons During Trump\">executive privilege<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Executive Privilege Claim Denied<\/h3>\n<p>Navarro claimed that President Trump invoked executive privilege and instructed him not to testify before the committee. However, Judge Amit Mehta\u200d ruled \u200dthat \u2063Navarro could not use\u200d the executive\u2062 privilege claim as a defense.<\/p>\n<p>The judge questioned the lack of evidence supporting Navarro&#8217;s claims and stated that\u200b the privilege must be invoked directly by the president or\u2063 someone authorized by him.
