(Photo by Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/james-meyers\">James Meyers<\/a><br \/>5:15 PM \u2013 Tuesday, September 5, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 \u200dyears in prison by Federal Judge Tim Kelly on Tuesday, for \u201ctaking a lead role\u201d in the\u200b January 6<sup>th<\/sup> protest. <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/proud-boys-members-ex-leader-enrique-tarrio-found-guilty\/\">longest sentence<\/a> to date for any member who was involved in the \u200bprotest at \u2064the U.S. Capitol. <\/p>\n<p>The \u206439-year-old, who was the former national \u2063chairman of the group, was convicted \u200din May by the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> committee on seditious conspiracy for working with other members to stop the transfer of power between then-President Donald Trump to current-President Joe Biden. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors were initially seeking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-seeks-33-year-jail-terms-for-proud-boys-in-jan-6-breach\/\" title=\"DOJ wants 33-year prison sentences for Proud Boys in Jan. 6 breach.\">33-year prison sentence<\/a> for Tarrio, which also\u200d would have been the strictest punishment recommendation for someone charged \u2064in the Justice Department\u2019s investigation into the U.S. Capitol\u200c breach. <\/p>\n<p>However, Tarrio, who\u200c was not present in Washington, D.C., the day of the \u200bprotest, was arrested two\u200c days prior and ordered \u2064to stay out \u200dof the city with prosecutors claiming that he still organized and directed the mob of people. <\/p>\n<p>During the sentencing, prosecutors described Tarrio as a \u201cnaturally\u2062 charismatic leader\u201d and \u201ca savvy propagandist\u201d who \u2063then\u200b used his influence over his followers to help prompt the protest. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis defendant, and his co-conspirators targeted our\u2063 entire system\u2063 of government,\u201d assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Mulroe said during\u2064 Tuesday\u2019s hearing. \u201cThis offense involved calculation and deliberation. We need to make sure that the consequences are abundantly clear to anyone who might be\u200d unhappy with the results in 2024, 2028, 2032 or \u2063any\u2063 future\u2062 election for\u2062 as long as\u200b this case is remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Tarrio\u2019s attorneys claimed that the January\u2062 6<sup>th<\/sup> committee exaggerated his intentions and that his real goal of rallying members of the group\u2064 to Washington, D.C., was to confront protesters from the far-left terrorist organization Antifa. <\/p>\n<p>Attorneys also\u2062 argued that he never directed any of his \u2063followers movements and had no ability to \u200bcontrol his followers\u2019\u2064 actions at the time\u200b of the event.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cMy \u200bclient is no terrorist. My client\u2062 is a misguided patriot, \u2064that\u2019s what my client is,\u201d Tarrio\u2019s attorney Sabino Jauregui said. \u201cHe was\u200b trying to protect this country, as misguided as he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Tarrio\u200d spoke at the hearing,\u2062 apologizing for his actions, \u201cI will\u2064 have to live with that shame and disappointment for the rest of my life,\u201d Tarrio said. \u201cWe invoked 1776 and\u2063 the Constitution of the United States\u200b and that was so wrong to do. That was a perversion. The events of January\u200d 6th is something that should never be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kelly also sentenced other\u2063 Proud Boys leaders last week. <\/p>\n<p>He sentenced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/former-proud-boys-leader-joe-biggs-sentenced-to-17-yrs-in-prison-for-jan-6-involvement\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/former-proud-boys-leader-joe-biggs-sentenced-to-17-yrs-in-prison-for-jan-6-involvement\/\">Joseph Biggs<\/a> \u200bto 17 years in prison, Zachary Rehl to 15 years \u200din prison, and Ethan Nordean was sentenced to 18 years in prison. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe defendants understood the stakes, and they embraced their role in bringing about a revolution, \u201cprosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum earlier this month for Tarrio and other Proud Boys. \u201cthey unleashed a force on the capitol that was calculated to exert their political will on elected officials by force and to undo the results of a \u2063democratic election. The foot soldiers \u2063of the\u200d right aimed to \u200dkeep their\u2064 leader in power. They failed. They are\u200c not heroes; they are criminals.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay informed!
