This comes after the Attorney General has faced criminal investigations, legal battles \u2062and accusations of corruption for many years in the position. <\/p>\n<p>He will become the third person to face an impeachment trial in\u2064 the \u200chistory of\u200c the Texas legislature. <\/p>\n<p>Paxton is considered a close ally of former \u200dPresident Donald Trump, he led several\u2064 lawsuits in \u200cthe 2020 presidential election results\u2062 in\u200d Pennsylvania, Georgia and \u200bWisconsin, which showed a victory\u200c for now\u2064 President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s attorneys claim the impeachment accusations are baseless and Paxton himself has said the trial is a \u201cpolitically motivated sham,\u201d and an effort to lose his voters. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Paxton won a third \u2063term \u200bdespite criminal state charges against him and an ongoing FBI investigation. <\/p>\n<p>The impeachment \u200bvote is based on \u2063Paxton\u2019s former deputies\u2019 claims of the attorney general having a relationship \u200cwith\u2062 a real estate investor who reciprocated with favors, and hiring a woman with whom he\u2063 had an extramarital affair with. <\/p>\n<p>The attorney general faces\u200c a trial by\u2062 a jury, which includes all 31 state\u2063 senators and a judge, Republican \u200bLt.\u200d Gov. Dan Patrick who\u2062 donated $125,000 to his last re-election campaign. Paxton\u2019s wife, Senator Angela Paxton (R-Texas) will attend \u2063the trial but will\u2064 not be allowed to participate\u2064 or vote. <\/p>\n<p>A two-thirds majority vote is required for conviction, which would mean if all 12 Senate\u2063 Democrats \u2064vote\u2063 against Paxton, they would need nine of the 19 Republicans to vote\u2064 the\u2064 same way. <\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
