The immediate casus \u200dbelli\u200c for the protest was the imposition of a\u2062 vaccine mandate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-rolls-out-plan-to-alleviate-trucker-shortage\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Rolls Out Plan To Alleviate Trucker Shortage\">truckers crossing<\/a> \u200dthe United States-Canada border.<\/p>\n<p>The convoy consisted \u200cof roughly 400 large trucks\u200b and other vehicles, which were parked around Parliament Hill, blocking traffic. The protest \u2064ballooned in size\u200b as others\u2063 joined the truckers, and several spinoff protests set up shop in other cities \u200cas \u200bwell,\u200c blocking international crossing points \u200dwith the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2062 Ottawa, the trucks blared their air horns day and night,\u200b irritating residents. The protests took on a\u2064 party-like atmosphere for some time as the protesters set up a stage, bouncy castles, and even an outdoor hot tub. The protesters\u2064 also\u2062 set off fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>On\u2062 Feb. \u206314, 2022, Trudeau undertook the unprecedented move of invoking the Emergencies \u200dAct, authorizing a crackdown on the protests. Protesters&#8217; bank \u200daccounts were \u2063frozen, and dozens were arrested,\u200c among them Lich and Barber.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Implications and Central Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Of their charges, mischief \u200cis likely to be the \u200cbiggest\u2062 point\u2062 of contention for the two organizers. Canadian law defines mischief &#8220;as the\u2064 willful destruction, damaging, obstruction, or\u2064 interference of property,&#8221; \u2064the BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the obvious political\u200b nature of the trial, the organizers&#8217; lawyers have \u200dstressed that the trial is not about the Freedom Convoy \u2062in\u2064 and of itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We \u2063do \u200bnot expect this to be the trial of the &#8216;Freedom Convoy,&#8221;&#8216; they\u200c said in a \u2063joint statement Friday, obtained\u200d by the \u2062CBC. &#8220;The central issue will be whether\u2063 the actions of two of the organizers of a peaceful protest should warrant \u200ccriminal sanction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite this,\u2063 analysts and the defendants acknowledge that\u200b the \u2064trial has wide-ranging\u200d implications, both for other \u2062Freedom Convoy protesters and Canadian law in general.<\/p>\n<p>The trial &#8220;pits the\u2063 free speech and free\u200b association rights of convoy organizers against the public interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/everything-to-know-about-the-freedom-convoy-trial-in-canada\/\" title=\"Key details on the 'Freedom Convoy' trial in Canada.\">keeping city streets liveable<\/a> for residents,&#8221; Paul Daly,\u200d the chairman in administrative law and \u200bgovernance at the University of \u2064Ottawa,\u200b said. He added that the central \u200dpoint of the \u200ctrial will\u2062 be deciding how much responsibility the two hold for any illegal acts by the other protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Lich has acknowledged that she believes her trial \u2062will set \u2064a precedent for \u200cothers \u2063being tried in connection with the Freedom \u200cConvoy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another key\u2064 aspect will be how\u200c close Lich and Barker were in their activities surrounding the protest: Prosecutors are trying\u200d to portray the two as \u200ccompletely in sync, allowing evidence against one to apply to both of them.
