The White House announced that the mission included \u2063a feat \u201cthat had never been accomplished or even attempted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a yearlong deployment in Vietnam in 1968, Taylor had \u200cflown hundreds of combat missions in UH-1 \u201cHuey\u201d and Cobra helicopters.\u2064 During an \u200binterview with The Associated Press, Taylor said that they \u201cnever lost a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cYou just \u200ddo whatever is expedient and do whatever to save the lives of \u200cthe people you\u2019re trying to rescue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the \u200cnight of\u2064 June 18, 1968, Taylor, who was a 1<sup>st<\/sup> Lieutenant at the time, flew his Cobra attack helicopter into heavy enemy\u200d fire to\u2063 save\u200c the four men after they had been surrounded by the enemy. The \u2064men who were trapped \u2064had been on a night mission to track movements of enemy troops near the Saigon River when they had been\u2063 discovered.<\/p>\n<p>A firefight ensued, and soon the men \u2062were running out of ammunition and being\u2064 surrounded, they radioed for help. Taylor arrived minutes later at \u2062the scene, which is now Ho Chi Minh City, and \u2063asked\u2063 the men on the ground to send up flares to mark\u200d their \u2063location\u200d in the night.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor \u2064and a\u2062 pilot in an accompanying helicopter fired \u200dtheir miniguns and rockets at the enemy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vietnam-helicopter-pilot-to-receive-medal-of-honor\/\" title=\"Vietnam pilot honored with Medal of Honor.\">making low-level attack runs<\/a>, despite the intense ground fire from the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>After about half an \u2064hour, the helicopters were running low on fuel and ammunition. Taylor\u2064 then directed the accompanying \u200dhelicopter to \u2062fly back \u200cto base. Taylor fired his remaining rounds then proceeded to use his landing lights to distract the enemy, while the team on the ground made \u200btheir way to the extraction point\u200c that he\u200c had pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>After the \u200bteam reached the extraction point, Taylor landed his\u2064 two-seat helicopter under enemy fire and at great \u2063personal risk to pick\u2062 up\u200d the four team members who clung to the outside of the helicopter as he flew them to safety.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI\u200c finally just\u2063 flew\u2062 up behind them and\u2064 sat down on the ground,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cThey turned around \u2064and jumped on the\u200c aircraft. A couple were sitting on the skids. One was sitting on the rocket \u200bpods, and I don\u2019t know where the \u200bother one was, but they beat\u2063 on the side of the ship twice, which \u200bmeant haul a\u2013. And we did!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According \u2063to the Army, what \u200cTaylor did that night had never been attempted before. During his service, he received \u2064a number of combat\u2062 decorations including the Silver \u2064Star, a\u2062 Bronze Star and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor had left Vietnam in \u200dAugust 1968, and \u200dwas released from active duty in 1970. He was \u2064discharged \u200dfrom the Army reserves\u2062 in 1973 and\u200b went on to \u2062run a roofing and sheet metal company in Chattanooga, \u200dTennessee.<\/p>\n<p>A special Patriot Day and \u201cWelcome Home\u201d parade is planned for September 11<sup>th<\/sup> at 11:30 AM in the city of Chattanooga\u2063 in honor\u200b of Taylor when he returns home from his trip\u200b to the White\u200d House.<\/p>\n<p>Stay \u200cinformed!
