Even if all 12 Democrats\u2064 vote against Mr. Paxton, nine out of the 19 Republicans would have to side with the Democrats for a conviction \u200bto take place.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Paxton Denies Wrongdoing<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Paxton \u2062has \u2064decried the \u2064impeachment as a \u201cpolitically\u2064 motivated sham\u201d and an effort to disenfranchise \u2064voters. The attorney general\u2019s lawyers say he won\u2019t testify in the Senate trial. He has said he expects to \u200dbe acquitted. His wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, will attend the trial but is not allowed to participate or vote.<\/p>\n<p>Back in May,\u2064 60 Republicans sided\u200d with 61 Democrats to impeach Mr. Paxton.\u200b Only 23 Republicans voted to keep him in office.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Paxton\u2019s impeachment has triggered strong reactions from his support base within the GOP. A small group of\u2063 his supporters \u2062have pledged political retribution in case Mr. Paxton gets convicted and removed from office. Billboards have been\u200b set up \u200cin North Texas\u200b to rally\u200d support for the cause.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Davis, an activist running\u2063 for chairwoman of the Dallas County Republican Party, believes the efforts of \u2063Mr. Paxton\u2019s supporters will \u200bsee success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo\u200d most voters, it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/n-y-rep-reed-considering-gubernatorial-run-to-challenge-gov-cuomo\/\" title=\"N.Y. Cuomo\">political witch hunt<\/a>,&#8221; she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2023\/08\/31\/ken-paxton-allies-seek-to-influence-impeachment-trial-vow-retribution-if-hes-convicted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Dallas Morning News<\/a>. &#8220;People do not\u2063 agree with how the House went about what they were doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There were rumors that Mr.\u2062 Paxton would resign prior to\u2062 the impeachment trial. \u2063However, \u200dhe shut down the rumor in an Aug.\u2064 27 post on X, stating \u200d\u201cWrong! I will never stop fighting for the people of Texas and defending our conservative values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Mr. \u2063Paxton\u2019s impeachment and suspension, Texas \u200bGov. Greg Abbott has appointed two \u2064interim attorneys\u200d general to take over his duties.<\/p>\n<h2>Allegations Against Paxton<\/h2>\n<p>The trial will likely\u2064 bring forth new evidence. But the outline of the allegations against \u200cMr. Paxton has been public since 2020, when eight of his top deputies told the FBI that the attorney general was breaking the law to help Austin\u2063 real estate developer Nate Paul.<\/p>\n<p>The deputies told investigators that Mr. Paxton\u200b had\u200d gone against \u200dtheir advice \u2063and\u200d hired an outside lawyer\u200c to probe\u2064 Mr. Paul\u2019s allegations\u2064 of wrongdoing by the FBI in\u2064 its\u2062 investigation of the developer. They\u2062 also said Mr. Paxton\u200d pressured his staff to take other actions that helped \u200dMr. Paul.<\/p>\n<p>In return,\u200d Mr. Paul allegedly\u2062 hired a \u2062former aide to a Republican state senator with whom Mr. Paxton was having \u200ban\u2063 affair and bankrolled the \u2063renovations of one of the\u200c attorney general\u2019s \u200dproperties,\u200b a million-dollar home in\u2063 Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Paul\u200d was \u2064indicted\u200c in June on federal criminal charges that he made false\u200d statements to banks to secure more than $170 million in loans.
