There are mediated negotiations going on, which I \u2063think \u200bis\u200b positive,\u201d Freeman Shaheen, head of\u2064 global gas at Chevron\u200d told reporters at the Gastech\u200c conference \u200din Singapore.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shaheen said\u2064 everybody has the right to industrial action, but he does not \u200bthink it\u2019s \u2063needed. \u201cSo we\u2019re hopeful \u200cand they\u2019ll continue the negotiated mediation and that we \u200dwill get to the right spot.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employees last week almost unanimously \u2063rejected a pay and\u200c conditions deal\u2063 put to them directly by Chevron, bypassing unions.<\/p>\n<p>The Offshore Alliance,\u200c a \u2062coalition of\u200b two unions, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the status of the talks, which are not open to the\u2062 public\u2064 or media.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial action will begin at 6.00 am local\u2063 time on Thursday (2200 GMT\u2064 on Wednesday) at Chevron\u2019s Gorgon and Wheatstone projects, which account \u2064for more than 5% of global LNG production\u2062 capacity, if \u2063parties cannot find a \u2062resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Employees plan work stoppages of\u200b up to 11 hours\u200b in several time blocks and will stop performing certain tasks until at least Sept. 14.<\/p>\n<p>The union group has said the stoppages could cost Chevron \u201cbillions of dollars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Prolonged industrial action could disrupt LNG exports \u2062and increase \u2063competition for the super-chilled fuel, forcing \u2063Asian buyers to outbid European buyers to attract LNG cargo.\u2063 China and Japan\u200b are the top two lifters of Australian \u200bLNG, followed by South Korea and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u200b have \u2063in place business continuity plans\u2026 \u200cWe \u200bdo\u2062 plan to be a reliable supplier.
