The number of overall\u200d foreign \u200dapplications roughly doubled to 1,442. \u2063  <\/p>\n<p>High travel demand in the United States, where pilots are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/canadian-pilots-eye-higher-paid-u-s-cockpits-as-staffing-shortages-bite\/\" title=\"Canadian pilots are considering better-paying opportunities in the United States due to staffing shortages.\">securing historic \u2063wage increases<\/a>, is attracting foreign \u2064aviators, despite delays and \u200dhigh costs of immigrating, according to lawyers, unions and pilots.<\/p>\n<p>While small, the increase in U.S. applications is\u200d worrisome for regional Canadian carriers, \u200bwhich like their U.S. counterparts, are wrestling with staffing shortages as they lose pilots to \u200clarger airlines, industry \u2062experts say. <\/p>\n<p>It \u2062could also put \u2064pressure on Air Canada during negotiations with \u200dits\u200c pilots,\u2064 whose\u2063 contract expires on September 29.<\/p>\n<p>Air Canada said\u200b this week it would \u2062halt six non-stop flights from Calgary at\u200c the\u2062 end of October because of \u201cresource pressures\u201d due to an\u2062 industry wide shortage of regional \u2063pilots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a concern,\u201d said John Gradek, \u2062a faculty lecturer in aviation management at\u200b McGill University in Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>At Sunwing Airlines, \u2064at least \u206310% of the roughly\u200c 490 pilots are applying to work in the U.S., said Mark Taylor, president of the Unifor union local, which represents aviators at\u200c the company. <\/p>\n<p>Taylor said he\u2064 has raised the issue with Sunwing, which didn\u2019t return requests for comment. \u200cSunwing has been acquired by WestJet Airlines, which likewise\u200d did not respond to requests \u200cfor comment.<\/p>\n<p>Two Sunwing\u2063 pilots,\u200d who spoke on condition of anonymity because they have not advised their employer of their plans, \u200dsaid they have obtained licenses to fly in the U.S. and are\u2062 awaiting immigration paperwork\u2064 to move, due to the higher\u200b pay and \u2063the \u200bhigh cost of living in Canada\u2019s\u200b large cities.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Jean-Francois Harvey said about 29% of the 560 foreign pilots he\u2019s helped over the \u200dlast 12 months are Canadian and fly\u200c for Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing.<\/p>\n<p>Air Canada said it could not comment on \u201cindividual pilot career choices,\u201d but said it does not \u201chave difficulty attracting pilots\u201d to\u2064 its main carrier.<\/p>\n<p>According\u2064 to\u2063 Air Canada pilots represented by\u200b the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the hourly pay gap between the Canadian carrier and \u2064United \u200bAirlines is expected to grow \u2063from 3% in 2013\u2064 to 92% in 2024 for one category of experienced pilot. Air Canada pilots earned more before 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Gradek warned that the \u201ccascading effect\u201d of larger airlines recruiting pilots away from smaller carriers would lead to reduced frequencies and service cuts\u200d on \u2064regional routes. <\/p>\n<p>John McKenna, chief executive of the Air Transport \u200bAssociation of Canada\u200c (ATAC),\u200d which represents smaller Canadian carriers, said his members are already cutting frequencies due to staffing\u2062 shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is suffering\u200d right\u2063 now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting By Allison Lampert in Montreal;
