Inflated valuations alone don\u2019t cause stocks \u2062to drop, \u2064but they can provide\u200b a pretty good guide of how \u2064far \u200dthe stocks could drop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traders positioned in value stocks are hoping that 2023 will avoid the September Effect, as this corner of the equities arena has been mixed all year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Value \u2063stocks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stunning-reddit-shuts-down-wallstreetbets-subgroup-blames-racism-and-hate-speech-after-rookie-investors-in-general-public-make-money-causing-hedge-funds-to-go-bust\/\" title=\"STUNNING: Reddit Shuts Down WallStreetBets Subgroup \u2014 Blames Racism and Hate Speech \u2014 After Rookie Investors in General Public Make Money Causing Hedge Funds to Go Bust\">publicly traded companies<\/a> with lower share prices \u2062than\u200c the performance of their underlying \u200dfundamentals. Some of the most notable names are JPMorgan Chase, Nike, and\u200b Walmart. The counterpart is \u200cgrowth stocks, firms that are anticipated to expand sales and earnings at a faster \u2064pace than the market average. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/value-stocks-look-to-avoid-september-effect-fears-after-enduring-mixed-year\/\" title=\"Value stocks aim to sidestep concerns about the \"September Effect\" following a year of inconsistent performance.\">generally includes top juggernauts<\/a> \u2062like Apple,\u2062 Nvidia, and Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>The Morningstar US Value Index has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningstar.com\/markets\/markets-brief-value-stocks-suffered-2023-are-showing-signs-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggled<\/a> for most of\u2062 the year, kicking off 2023 with a 4.29 percent\u200d gain and then only recovering in June \u200cand July. In August, the index tumbled nearly \u20624 percent.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the Morningstar US Growth Index has performed well for most of the year. In January, it soared close to 11 percent and then posted significant gains \u2064in March, \u200bMay, June, \u200dand July. \u2064Last month, the index plummeted \u200dnearly 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Value stocks have\u2064 generally found it hard to keep up with\u200c growth stocks, which have \u2062been \u200dfueled by the monster rally in the &#8220;Magnificent\u200d Seven&#8221; \u200bstocks (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia, \u200cand Tesla). Indeed, value stocks have been \u2062marketed as \u2063less risky investment vehicles since the companies are already \u200destablished and provide steady dividend payments, \u2063while growth is \u200cviewed as an opportunity to maximize your capital returns.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, \u2063value is \u200bpoised to outperform\u2064 growth this year, Vanguard says.<\/p>\n<p>Bank analysts, using the Vanguard\u2062 Capital Markets Model\u00ae (VCMM), <a href=\"https:\/\/advisors.vanguard.com\/insights\/article\/series\/market-perspectives#projected-returns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project<\/a> \u2062that U.S. \u200bvalue stocks will offer returns\u200c of between 4.6 percent and 6.6 percent.\u2062 Growth is only expected to deliver \u2064a return \u2063of between \u200b0.8 percent and 2.8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Vanguard also recently raised\u200c its outlook on the Fed&#8217;s policy rate,\u200c forecasting that the \u2064Fed funds rate\u2063 could climb as \u2063high as 6.25 percent to finish the year.\u2064 However, \u2062the\u2064 futures\u200c market expects the \u200dFederal Open Market Committee (FOMC) \u200cto leave the policy rate \u200cin the target range of 5 percent\u200c and 5.25 \u2063percent, with rate \u200dcuts sometime in\u200c spring 2024, according to the \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/markets\/interest-rates\/cme-fedwatch-tool.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CME FedWatch Tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mo-restaurant-reopens-as-private-club-after-being-closed-for-defying-covid-19-regulations\/\" title=\"Mo. restaurant reopens as \u2018private club\u2019 after being closed for defying COVID-19 regulations\">pedestrian walks past<\/a> the New \u2063York Stock Exchange in New York on Oct. 27, 2022.\u2063 (J. David Ake\/AP Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fed \u2063Chair Jerome Powell warned in his keynote address at the Jackson Hole economic symposium that the central bank\u2063 could \u2063keep raising\u200c rates because inflation is &#8220;too\u2064 high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the upward movement in interest \u2063rates has\u2064 been a boon for other assets, particularly money markets and\u200c Treasury \u2062securities.<\/p>\n<h2>Rise of the Money Markets<\/h2>\n<p>But if value investors are\u200d searching for safe bets in the stock market, they\u2064 might also be turning \u200cto money\u200b markets\u2014cash\u200d investments that maintain short maturities\u2014and\u2062 Treasurys.<\/p>\n<p>Since March 2022, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates by \u200b500 basis\u200c points \u2063to their highest levels in more than two decades. As a result, when individuals\u200c and companies are taking advantage of cash \u2064investments, they\u200b are \u2063earning 5 percent guaranteed \u200creturns.<\/p>\n<p>Yields on Treasurys ranging from 1 month to 1\u2062 year are returning more than 5 percent. The 2-year yield is\u200c also inching \u2062toward the 5 percent\u2064 mark.
