However, the referee noticed something was off before the play started, prompting him to blow his whistle as\u200b Martin collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had to \u200ctalk \u2064to him, and when I asked if he was alright, he \u200ctold me, &#8216;no,'&#8221; \u2064Mr. Vasbinder said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butlereagle.com\/20230901\/karns-city-quarterback-collapses-at-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Butler Eagle<\/a>. &#8220;So that&#8217;s when I knew something was wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The game was stopped early and the Redbanks were named the winner as they were leading 35\u20136 when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vasbinder said\u2063 the medical emergency\u200d led \u200bstaff members to enforce a series of protocols, including some\u2063 of \u2063which the referee never had to follow in \u2064a game before last week&#8217;s\u2064 incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we\u2063 saw it got\u2063 to the point where\u200d they were bringing on an ambulance, we talked to Redbank Valley\u2019s \u200bcoach and Karns City\u2019s coach, who\u200c was obviously with his\u200d player,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we just tried to stay back and \u200bkeep calm, \u2062so things didn\u2019t escalate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Martin was taken off the field in a Karns City ambulance before \u200dbeing flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital\u200b in Pittsburgh in \u200da STAT MedEvac helicopter, \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/d9sports.com\/karns-city-senior-mason-martin-transported-by-medical-helicopter-to-pittsburgh-hospital-after-collapsing-on-the-field-during-game-against-redbank-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D9Sports.com reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, Stacy King Martin, shared \u200can update on her son\u2019s health condition in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KC_GremlinFball\/status\/1698344027794387076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> on social media on Sept. 3, thanking everyone for \u200ctheir love and support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mason remains in critical condition with little change\u2063 over the last 36 hours,&#8221; her \u200bmessage reads. &#8220;The truth is we need a\u2063 miracle. I&#8217;m not saying that to sound grim, but to let you \u200cknow that we need the strength of your prayers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No \u2064one believes in this kid\u200d more than us, \u200cbut he needs everyone&#8217;s strength\u200c and prayers,&#8221; the message continues. &#8220;Right now, we \u2064have to wait for the swelling to go down to assess the extent of \u2062the damage to the brain. So please pray the way he \u2063has always played\u200d the game, all out \u200bholding\u200b nothing back, maybe a little angry, definitely aggressive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Karns\u2063 City Gremlin \u2062Football \u200dProgram also issued a lengthy statement after the incident, saying the school has counselors available for students and staff who need to talk to someone after witnessing Martin&#8217;s serious\u2064 on-the-field injury.<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Thompson, \u200ca spectator who was there with her\u2064 daughter, said the situation was reminiscent of Buffalo Bills safety Damar \u200bHamlin&#8217;s collapse during\u2064 the Jan. 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not from this school district, but my\u2063 daughter \u200dwanted \u2064to \u2063come to the game,&#8221; Ms. Thompson said,\u00a0the Butler Eagle reported. &#8220;It\u2019s just really scary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hamlin revealed the official cause of his collapse during a press conference in April, \u2064saying he collapsed due to a condition that mostly happens to teenagers playing baseball.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The diagnosis of what happened to me was basically commotio cordis.
