The Presidential Records Act was \u2063nowhere mentioned in that 49-page indictment in the \u2064documents\u200b case. I think the Espionage\u200c Act, \u2064under which Trump was\u200b charged, is the most un-American statute in our history,\u201d Mr. Ramaswamy told <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-9-3-23-vivek-ramaswamy-sen\/story?id=102886138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week\u201d<\/a> on\u2064 Sept. \u20623.<\/p>\n<p>The former president is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-hit-with-3-more-charges-in-documents-case-3rd-defendant-added-5428431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged<\/a> with 40 counts, \u2064including 32 counts of willful retention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-rips-trump-for-doing-the-same-thing-the-obama-administration-did\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Rips Trump For Doing The Same Thing The Obama Administration Did\">national defense information<\/a> under the\u2062 Espionage Act, over his alleged mishandling of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-intel-committee-issues-bipartisan-request-for-more-info-on-mar-a-lago-raid\/\" title=\"Senate Intel Committee Issues Bipartisan Request for More Info on Mar-a-Lago Raid\">classified documents found<\/a> at \u2064his \u2064Mar-a-Lago\u2064 resort. He argued the law has a history of\u200d being used to \u201cstifle political\u200c opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Presidential Records Act of 1978 \u2063gives the president the\u2062 sole \u200cauthority to decide what records to take\u2064 with him when he\u2062 leaves office. The indictment of Mr. Trump, which doesn\u2019t even mention the Presidential Records Act, suggests the Espionage Act is again a weapon against \u2062dissent, as it was in 1917,\u201d he explained in a post on X, formerly known as\u200d Twitter.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Dark\u2062 Direction for This Country\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Ramaswamy expressed\u2063 concerns about the direction\u200d the country \u200bis headed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we continue to set a dangerous precedent. I do not want to see us march to some kind of national divorce, and I am worried,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cDay by day, we&#8217;re inching in a dark direction for \u200cthis\u200c country. I don&#8217;t want\u200b to see another day like January \u20646th in \u200dthis country. But I think the way we&#8217;re going to get there is by moving this nation forward\u2014not by engaging in vengeance-driven prosecution to eliminate one man from running, becoming some sort of banana republic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ramaswamy added \u200bthat he didn\u2019t want his path to becoming the next U.S. president to be marked\u200b by President Trump being eliminated owing to his legal troubles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be easier for me if Donald \u2062Trump were eliminated from competition. That is why it&#8217;s particularly important for me to state with clarity that on principle, I\u2019m still against seeing him eliminated that way, and that&#8217;s why I have been so vocal about this,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Reunite the Country\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Ramaswamy reiterated his plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/ramaswamy-wants-to-partner-with-trump-to-destroy-the-deep-state-5470043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pardon<\/a> the former president,\u2062 adding that doing \u200cso would be \u2062good for the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Donald Trump&#8217;s the nominee,\u200d yes, I will support\u200d him, and if I\u2019m the president, yes, I will pardon him because that will help reunite the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, pardoning the \u2062former president wouldn\u2019t\u200d be\u2063 \u201cthe\u2063 most important thing\u201d for him to do if elected, Mr. Ramaswamy said.
