At \u2063least in the Republican Party. Having achieved relevance\u2064 in the latter stages of the Cold War by breaking\u2063 with the Democratic Party (where most of them came from) and supporting\u2063 President Ronald Reagan\u2019s policies that won\u200c the Cold War,\u2062 the neoconservatives spent much of the post-Cold War world finding \u2062new \u201cmonsters \u200dto destroy\u201d (to\u2062 use the famous phrase of John Quincy Adams).\u200b <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-358177380\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-89d7e758ed658b0bd0c6f2d2e7a46e3b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-89d7e758ed658b0bd0c6f2d2e7a46e3b\"><\/div>\n<p>They first picked Saddam Hussein in Iraq. But after the U.S. military achieved a quick victory on the battlefield\u200c in 1991 and forced Iraqi forces to leave Kuwait, the neoconservatives criticized the Bush 41 administration for not toppling the Iraqi regime. During the Clinton administration, the neocons were ardent champions of U.S. intervention in the\u2062 Balkans. <\/p>\n<p>Then, after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the neoconservatives persuaded \u2062the George W. \u200dBush administration not only to retaliate against\u200d our enemies in Afghanistan \u200cbut to \u200ddeclare a \u201cGlobal War on Terror\u201d and launch a crusade to democratize the Arab regimes of the Middle East. Bush 43, backed by the neoconservatives and using\u200b Wilsonian rhetoric, preemptively attacked Iraq, overthrew the heinous Hussein regime, declared \u201cvictory,\u201d and then needlessly expended the lives of American soldiers and American treasure \u2062in failed efforts to remake \u200cthe Middle East in America\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>At the same\u2062 time\u200c that \u2062the neoconservatives\u2063 promoted the democratization of the Middle East, they also urged \u2062the Bush 43 administration\u2062 to expand NATO closer to Russia\u2019s border, ignoring the prudent counsel of Bush 41 Secretary of State James Baker (who told Russian leaders that\u200d NATO would\u200b not expand if Russia didn\u2019t contest German reunification), and\u2062 Russian expert and elder statesman George F. Kennan who presciently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1997\/02\/05\/opinion\/a-fateful-error.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a> that NATO expansion would revive the worst aspects of Russian nationalism and imperialism. <\/p>\n<p>Bush 43 not \u200donly expanded NATO further (Romania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia were given membership in 2004,\u2063 while Albania and Croatia were invited during the Bush \u206243 administration but formally joined in 2009), he also publicly \u200bcalled for Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance. The neocons \u2063also urged U.S. intervention\u200c in \u200dSyria and Libya in 2011 as \u2063part\u200c of \u200ctheir championing of the so-called \u201cArab Spring,\u201d which \u2062led not to democracy but\u200d instead \u2062to anarchy, chaos, and increased Russian and Chinese \u2063influence \u2063in the region.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-62caaee9f4f3f958f45daa4dbe27b1ec fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-62caaee9f4f3f958f45daa4dbe27b1ec\"><\/div>\n<p>Last year Jeffrey \u2062Sachs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffsachs.org\/newspaper-articles\/m6rb2a5tskpcxzesjk8hhzf96zh7w7\">wrote<\/a> that Ukraine is \u201cthe latest neocon disaster.\u201d He described the\u2063 war in Ukraine as \u201cthe culmination \u2064of a 30-year project of the American neoconservative movement.\u201d Sachs in that \u200bpiece recounted the neocon track record of\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ukraine-is-neocons-last-gasp\/\" title=\"Ukraine: Neocons' Final Stand\">promoting disastrous military adventures<\/a> that have resulted\u200d in diminishing U.S. influence abroad and, in the case of Ukraine, \u200drisking a wider European war. Sachs concluded that \u201c[i]nstead of risking this disaster,\u200c the real solution is to end the neocon fantasies\u200c of the \u2063past 30 years and \u2062for Ukraine and Russia to return to the negotiating table, with NATO committing to end its commitment to the eastward enlargement to\u200b Ukraine and Russia in return for a viable peace that respects and protects\u200b Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sachs\u2019 \u2062call for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine \u200cWar was echoed recently in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/case-american-led-peace-ukraine-206732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pages<\/a> of\u00a0The National Interest\u00a0by Russia expert Alex Burilkov and State Department consultant and military\u200d intelligence officer Wesley Satterwhite. Burilkov and Satterwhite call for an American-led peace effort in Ukraine before Russia launches a new offensive in the wake of Ukraine\u2019s failed summer offensive.\u200b They call their proposed solution a \u201cKorea scenario,\u201d which will result in Ukraine trading parts of four regions\u200c occupied by Russia for \u201crobust Western (American) \u200bsecurity\u200b guarantees.\u201d This, the\u2064 authors write, would enable\u200d the United States to \u201cdefuse tensions with Moscow\u201d and focus on the Pacific and China, where we face a \u201ctrue peer rival.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The \u2064authors worry, however, that Russia might seek victory instead of a \u2064negotiated solution, and if Russia achieves\u200d a victory \u2062it would be a \u201csignificant setback for the United States\u201d \u2064and NATO. A Russian victory \u200bwould \u2064also strengthen the Sino-Russian strategic partnership. America, the authors write, must pursue \u200bserious peace negotiations now with both \u200cUkraine and Russia. \u201cOnly then,\u201d they write, \u201cwill the United States be able to focus entirely on containing China, which is of paramount importance to American security and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems, however, that the last thing the neocons want is peace in Ukraine. Instead, Kristol\u2019s group wants to \u201cput pressure on \u2063Republicans to do the right thing on Ukraine\u201d \u2014 which\u2063 means providing more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rep-stefanik-garlands-comment-on-cuomo-corruption-not-good-enough\/\" title=\"Rep. Stefanik: Garland\u2019s comment on Cuomo corruption \u2018not good enough\u2019\">military aid<\/a> and training to Ukrainian forces to enable them to achieve victory in the war. As Kelley Beaucar Vlahos <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/2023\/08\/17\/bill-kristol-leads-charge-to-make-republicans-think-right-on-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a> in\u00a0Responsible Statecraft, the neocons\u2019 focus \u2062is more \u200bwar, not diplomacy. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c9211920e4598ce5ac1e3ef042f55313 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c9211920e4598ce5ac1e3ef042f55313\"><\/div>\n<p>That also seems to be the\u2062 focus of the Biden administration, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/10\/politics\/ukraine-funding-supplemental-joe-biden\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently<\/a> asked Congress for $24 billion more in aid to Ukraine. It is high time for Republicans and America\u2019s leaders to ignore \u2063the advice of the Bill Kristols, Max\u200c Boots, and David Frums of the American political spectrum. They have been wrong \u2014 disastrously wrong \u2014 for the last 30 years. <\/p>\n<p>The words of Oliver Cromwell to Parliament \u200din 1653 and Leo Amery to Neville Chamberlain in 1940 should \u200bbe directed at the neoconservatives who still seek to exercise influence over U.S. foreign policy: \u201cYou have sat too long here for\u2064 any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you.
