These \u200bindividuals, along with \u200d17 \u200cothers, were \u200cindicted\u200c for their \u200brole in challenging the 2020\u2062 election\u200b results in Georgia. \u2064The district attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, Fani Willis, described\u2064 their actions as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-18-others-indicted-in-georgia-2020-election-case\/\" title=\"Trump and 18 others face indictment in Georgia's 2020 election case.\">criminal racketeering enterprise<\/a>&#8221; and\u2064 conspiracy to defraud citizens of their \u200dvote. The indictment,\u2064 spanning 98 pages, named the electors, \u200bPresident Trump, the attorneys who advised the president\u200b and electors,\u2064 and others who spoke to election witnesses during the vote challenge. Mr. Shafer argued, in his notice to remove his case to \u2062federal court, that he had called the Dec. 14, 2020 meeting \u2063to \u2064cast the votes in accordance with the legal requirements for alternate electors. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/afghan-refugee-girls-enter-u-s-with-older-men-as-husbands\/\" title=\"Afghan refugee girls enter U.S. with older men as husbands\">sought counsel<\/a> from the president&#8217;s\u200c legal team, who explained these requirements to\u200d the alternate electors. The transcript,\u200c in possession of Mr. Willis, supports this claim.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re conducting this because the contest\u2062 of the election in Georgia is ongoing. And\u200c so we continue to contest the election \u200bof the electors in Georgia,&#8221; Mr. Smith said after Mr. Shafer introduced him at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 4, 2020, \u2063President Trump filed a\u200d lawsuit against Georgia Secretary of \u2064State Brad Raffensberger, alleging tens of\u2062 thousands of illegal votes. A recount was conducted, resulting in Joe \u2063Biden&#8217;s 11,779-vote lead in \u200bthe state, securing Georgia&#8217;s 16 electoral votes for him on Dec. 14,\u2064 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>President Trump&#8217;s legal challenge was still pending in court as the deadline approached. To continue the challenge \u200cbeyond Dec. 14, 2020, two sets of \u200celectoral ballots needed \u200cto\u200d be \u2062cast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The President has filed a contest to the certified returns. That contest is pending,&#8221; \u200cMr. Shafer stated at the meeting. &#8220;It&#8217;s not \u2064been\u200b decided\u2063 or \u2064even heard by\u200b any judge with\u200d the authority\u2064 to\u200d hear it. And so \u2064in order to \u200bpreserve his rights, it&#8217;s important that\u200c the Republican nominees for Presidential\u200d Elector meet here\u2064 today and cast\u2064 their votes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Emulating the 1960 Procedures<\/h2>\n<p>In 1960, Democrat John F. Kennedy won Hawaii by a narrow margin of just 115 votes. Both Democrat and Republican officials sought a recount, which\u200c ultimately gave Republican Richard Nixon a 141-vote\u200d lead.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c election result was challenged and pending\u200d in court as the deadline to cast the electoral votes approached.
