Well, \u200bthat chyron software is obviously bigoted, too. \u200dOr are you \u200d <em>not committed<\/em> to doing the work of \u2064eradicating thousands of years of subjugation? Do better, Channel 4.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In case \u200dyou\u2019re not familiar with what I\u2019m talking about, a quick explainer: Channel 4 is the British over-the-air broadcaster you\u2019re probably not\u2064 intensely familiar with. It\u2019s kind of like the RC Cola of the Albion\u200d airwaves, right after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bluey-creator-reveals-jesus-reference-disney-abc-bbc-removed-hit-childrens-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC\u2019s<\/a> Coke and ITV\u2019s Pepsi.<\/p>\n<p>However, you may be familiar with a few \u2062of Channel 4\u2019s shows. \u201cBlack \u200cMirror\u201d originated on the \u2063broadcaster before\u200b series\u200b creator\/evil genius Charlie Brooker decided to take that sweet, sweet Netflix money and go to streaming. If your sense\u2063 of humor is\u2063 even bleaker than that of Mr. Brooker\u2019s, \u201cPeep Show\u201d \u2014 an innovative sitcom that used point-of-view shots \u2014\u200b garnered \u200ba cult\u200d audience in the U.K. and elsewhere in the English-speaking world.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the\u200b network is host to one\u200b of\u2064 the U.K.\u2019s biggest \u200ctelevision media exports: \u201cThe Great British Bake Off.\u201d But \u200cdon\u2019t expect to hear many other nations named on the show beside\u2062 Britain in \u2064the series going forward because that\u2019s\u2062 just tactless appropriation.<\/p>\n<h3>A Woke Bake Off<\/h3>\n<p>In a Friday\u200d piece \u200cin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2023\/sep\/01\/bake-off-new-series-alison-hammond-channel-4-behind-the-scenes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> \u200b\u2014 because <em>of course<\/em> it\u2062 had to be in the Guardian, the British outlet aimed at subscribers who think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ocasio-cortez-touts-phone-call-uk-labour-leader-jeremy-corbyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a> failed as a Labour leader \u200dbecause he was too \u2063much of a conservative reactionary \u2014 writer Michael\u200c Hogan\u200b discussed the changes going on behind the scenes at the \u200bimmensely popular baking competition, including it getting thoroughly bewoked.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, much of the attention in the piece was focused \u200belsewhere \u2014\u200b particularly \u2064on a presenter shakeup, in which British reality TV vet\u2064 Alison Hammond was brought in to replace former\u2062 co-host Matt Lucas.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c\u2018The Great British Bake Off\u2019 tent\u2064 was already a happy place, populated by cheery contestants and grinning crew members who clearly love their jobs \u200b(free cake is a mere bonus). The arrival of new presenter Alison Hammond has lifted \u2064it to fresh heights,\u201d Hogan gushed in the lede. \u201cThanks to her joyous presence and a back-to-basics approach, the upcoming 14th series promises to be the most show-stopping in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s \u2062certainly stopping <em>something<\/em>: namely, national-themed competitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a pivotal year for the hit cake-making\u2063 contest. Recent series have been \u200bcriticized for culturally insensitive theme weeks and challenges that had too much cooking\u2064 and not enough baking,\u201d Hogan\u2063 noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExecutive producer\u200b Kieran Smith accepts these gripes. \u2018I \u2064hold my hands up to the\u200c cooking complaint and the \u2063theme\u200b weeks,\u2019\u200c he admits. \u2018We didn\u2019t\u200c want to offend anyone, but the world has changed,\u2064 and the joke \u2064fell flat. We\u2019re not doing any \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/major-pollster-increases-republicans-predicted-midterm-advantage-abortion-ruling-not-moving-the-needle-for-dems\/\" title=\"Major Pollster Increases Republican\u2019s Predicted Midterm Advantage \u2014 Abortion Ruling Not Moving the Needle for Dems\">national themes<\/a>\u200d this year.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On, of course, a show called \u201cThe Great \u200dBritish Bake Off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was \u2062under the impression that Britishers in general had a wonderful sense of \u200dthe absurd. These are the \u200bpeople who gave us \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/legendary-comedian-john-cleese-mocks-hank-azarias-apology-voicing-simpsons-character\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monty Python\u2019s Flying Circus<\/a>,\u201d \u201cMr. Bean,\u201d \u2062\u201cThe Thick of It\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/spice-world-1998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spice World<\/a>.\u201d (Although \u2064there\u2019s always a chance the \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-spice-girl-mel-b-cancels-event-after-severe-injury-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spice Girls<\/a> weren\u2019t kidding.)<\/p>\n<p>Heck, \u2062even Channel 4 has made hay off of this\u200c sort of thing; in addition to \u201cPeep Show,\u201d it also\u2062 aired the aforementioned Brooker\u2019s criminally underrated \u201cNathan Barley,\u201d \u2063both shows which derive extensive humor from\u2062 distinctly British characters who are pathetic \u200cand\u200c ridiculous in their inability\u2064 to acknowledge how seriously \u200dpathetic and ridiculous they are.<\/p>\n<p>Those people are now no longer characters on shows being aired by the network. They\u2019re running the network \u2014 and the production\u2062 company behind the show, apparently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving listened to feedback, the program-makers Love Productions have tweaked\u200b the\u2063 recipe,\u201d the Guardian reported.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the backlash came, according\u2062 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-66689042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>, after \u200c\u201cMexican week\u201d \u200c\u2014 in which the hosts wore sombreros and spoke\u200c with fake accents.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Paul\u2064 Hollywood said he was \u201cgutted\u201d by accusations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/psychopathic-problem-white-mind-anti-white-racism-became-cool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">casual racism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d literally come\u200b back from Mexico about three\u200c weeks before we filmed the \u2062episode,\u201d\u200b he said. \u201cI was all\u200c over the place, and\u200b we set the challenges based on what \u200bI\u2019d seen there. The \u2064challenges\u2063 were very good, and everyone did a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, no more of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re \u2064going very traditional,\u201d Smith said, \u200cthe Guardian reported. \u201cWe\u2019re doing all the regular weeks: Cakes, Biscuits, Bread, Patisserie, Chocolate,\u200d plus Party Cakes is a new theme. No spoilers, but it features challenges \u2064I think viewers will love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only\u2063 have the English forgotten irony, they\u2019ve also forgotten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-nancy-pelosis-totalitarian-effort-change-english-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the language<\/a> they invented for the rest of us Anglophones.<\/p>\n<p>As per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/traditional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merriam-Webster\u2019s<\/a> definitions of \u2064traditional: \u201cof or relating\u200b to tradition : \u2064consisting of or derived from tradition; handed down\u200d from age to age; following \u2064or conforming to tradition : adhering to\u2062 past practices \u200bor established conventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what \u2063the opposite of \u201ctraditional\u201d is?\u2064 <em>Getting offended\u200d because your country is being represented as part of a competition\u2062 about baking freaking cakes<\/em>. That, in fact, \u200cis a profoundly new phenomenon supercharged by\u200b selective outrage on (here I use\u2063 the platform\u2019s traditional name) Twitter. In no way has this ever been a normative part of bake offs in general, and\u2064 \u201cThe Great British Bake Off\u201d in particular.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m primarily Irish by ethnic descent and was baptized \u2063as a \u200bCatholic, although I left the church. Both were\u200b brutally subjugated by the British for centuries. \u200cDo you know what my\u2063 reaction \u2014 and \u200cwhat \u200dthe reaction of most \u2063Irish Catholics \u2014 would have been to a weekly competition in \u201cThe\u200d Great British Bake Off\u201d based off \u200dof making a cake for an \u200dIrish first-communion celebration, complete with bad attempts \u200cat Hibernian accents?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh. Cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t get angry retweets, \u200dand it doesn\u2019t get Guardian write-ups, so guess\u2063 what? We\u2019re stuck with a stiffly woke show, where everybody tries to be cheerful and happy-clappy\u200c on the set \u2062of\u2064 \u201cThe Great\u2062 White-Supremacist, Colonialist Imperialist, Genocidal Privileged, Monarchical Nation Which Shall Not Be \u2063Named Bake\u2062 Off\u201d and not step <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/singer-ne-yo-furious-parents-push-transgenderism-children-makes-no-sense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on\u200c a cultural landmine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because \u200cI\u2019m assuming\u2064 there\u2019s going to be a mid-season name change, after all.
