Warns EV Owners About Hurricane Risks\">electric-powered vehicles \u2014 including golf carts<\/a> and scooters \u2014 that exposure\u2063 to salt water can cause the vehicles\u2019 batteries to catch fire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palm Harbor Fire Rescue<\/strong> on Florida\u2019s Gulf Coast issued\u2062 the warning on Facebook \u2063Wednesday afternoon, telling owners to move their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-hunter-biden-profited-from-joe-biden-losing-energy-race-with-communist-china\/\" title=\"Report: Hunter Biden Profited from Joe Biden Losing Energy Race with Communist China\">battery-powered vehicles<\/a> out of their garages if \u2064they \u2063had come in contact with salt water, to \u200bprevent the fire spreading to the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The warning was apparently triggered by a fire in a Tesla Wednesday in nearby Dunedin, a \u200ccity just south of the unincorporated \u200darea of\u200b Palm\u200b Harbor.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you own a hybrid or electric vehicle that has come into contact with saltwater \u200cdue to recent flooding within\u2064 the last 24 hours, it \u2062is crucial to relocate the vehicle from your garage without delay.,\u201d the post warned. \u201cSaltwater exposure can trigger combustion \u200cin lithium-ion batteries. If possible, transfer your vehicle to higher ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes golf carts and electric scooters,\u201d\u200b the post added. \u201cDon\u2019t drive these through water. PHFR\u200d crews have seen numerous residents out in golf\u2063 carts and \u2064children \u2062on scooters riding through water.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Florida Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis<\/h3>\n<p>The state fire marshal warned last year in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zg-here-is-how-florida-government-officials-are-eliminating-the-debris-left-by-hurricane-ian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hurricane Ian<\/a>\u2019s devastation of the threat the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ev-fail-tesla-rival-nikola-motors-recalls-battery-powered-electric-trucks-halts-sales-amid-fire-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric vehicle batteries<\/a> posed to those \u2064living in coastal areas\u2063 subject to storm surges.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Fire Marshal <strong>Jimmy Patronis<\/strong> \u200b had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fl-firefighters-face-major-ev-nightmare-hurricane-ian-tesla-catches-fire-salt-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously \u2062gone public<\/a> with his worries before\u200b sending a letter last October seeking answers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nhtsa-confirms-fire-marshals-worst-fears-ev-fires-hurricane-ian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> about what the Sunshine State could be facing in \u2064the future.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u2063 letter sent Oct. 7, 2022, to NHTSA Executive Director Jack Danielson, Patronis set a deadline of Oct. 14 for the national agency to answer questions regarding the threat to \u2064Florida firefighters from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ev-fail-car-dealers-turning-away-electric-vehicles-learning-harsh-economics-lesson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a> \u2062 in the hurricane zone with lithium batteries that have been\u200d damaged by exposure to saltwater and eventually ignited because of \u2063it.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, Patronis summarized his own experiences\u200d last \u200cweek when he witnessed first-hand the difficulty firefighters \u2063experience extinguishing a fire in an electric vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn October 6th, I\u2063 joined North Collier\u2063 Fire\u200d Rescue to assess response activities related to Hurricane Ian and saw with my own\u200d eyes an EV continuously ignite, and continually\u200c reignite, as fireteams doused the vehicle with tens-of-thousands of gallons of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubsequently, I was\u2064 informed\u2064 by the fire department that the vehicle, \u2063once\u200d again reignited when it was \u200dloaded \u200conto \u200cthe tow truck. Based on my\u2063 conversations with area firefighters, this is not an isolated \u200bincident. As you can appreciate, I am very \u2064concerned that we may\u200b have a\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-says-chinas-economy-is-ticking-time-bomb\/\" title=\"Biden warns of China's economic danger.\">ticking time\u200b bomb<\/a> on our hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patronis asked five questions, paraphrased below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has the NHTSA instructed manufacturers\u2063 of electric vehicles to\u200d inform customers about the particular dangers flooding pose\u2063 to\u200c lithium batteries?<\/li>\n<li>Does standard\u200c firefighter gear protect against gases\u2064 from EV fires?<\/li>\n<li>Should removing\u200d EVs from \u2062a hurricane zone be \u200ca designated duty in storm cleanup efforts?<\/li>\n<li>Does the NHTSA have information about specific timelines for \u200dthe danger from post-flooding fires in EVs?<\/li>\n<li>Does\u2064 the NHTSA have any guidance on locations \u2062where compromised\u2063 electric vehicles can be taken\u200d where they can burn out safely?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In \u2064an email to The Western Journal on later that week, \u200cthe NHTSA said it had been studying the\u2063 impact of saltwater corrosion \u200don\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/electric-vehicle-spontaneously-catches-fire-high-end-auto-dismantler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a> for a decade \u2014 since Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFires in electric vehicles can pose unique challenges for \u200cfirefighters and other first responders,\u201d the email stated. \u201cSince similar issues emerged with EVs\u200c after Superstorm Sandy, NHTSA has been researching \u200dthe effect of saltwater immersion on batteries, and\u2062 working with \u200bstakeholders to equip first responders with best practices\u2064 on \u200cfighting battery fires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the NHTSA \u200dlaunched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/battery-safety-initiative#:~:text=NHTSA%20is%20establishing%20its%20Battery%20Safety%20Initiative%20for,analyze%20data%20related%20to%20electric%20vehicle%20battery%20safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battery Safety Initiative<\/a>. According to the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/news\/electric-vehicle-battery-safety-us-regulators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNET<\/a>, the goal is to\u2064 \u201cresearch \u2064areas such as battery diagnostics, management systems and even cybersecurity\u2064 to ensure future cars with batteries onboard to power the entire vehicle are as\u2063 safe as\u200c can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Considering that electric vehicles in large numbers are a fairly new \u200cdevelopment, \u200bit\u2019s likely that the country even a \u200byear later just doesn\u2019t\u2063 have enough experience yet\u2062 to fully\u2064 know some of those answers \u2062to\u200b all of\u200d Patronis\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There\u2019s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start. That\u2019s a new challenge that our \u200cfirefighters\u200b haven\u2019t faced before.
