You know the debate that\u2019s been going on: Oh, traditional OEM (manufacturer) over 100 years old, can you make this step? We can\u2063 and we want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show\u2063 car\u200d previews a multibillion-euro effort to jump the technology\u2062 gap with Tesla and \u2063other EV makers that are winning customers with models and \u200csoftware-driven features \u200cmany current BMWs\u200c do not match.<\/p>\n<p>That is despite BMW being relatively early to embrace EVs with the launch of the i3 compact in 2013 \u2013 a car that never \u200dshifted large volumes and was eventually \u200cdiscontinued \u200din 2022. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeue Klasse is\u2063 by far the biggest investment \u2063in our history. Because the technology\u200d we \u200dare using all over \u200bBMW is all new \u2064in all areas, without exception,\u201d Frank Weber, BMW\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/burn-every-cop-precinct-to-the-ground-new-dccc-cto-tweeted-violent-anti-police-rhetoric\/\" title=\"\u2018Burn Every Cop Precinct To The Ground\u2019: New DCCC CTO Tweeted Violent, Anti-Police Rhetoric\">chief technology officer<\/a>, said in\u2062 an\u2063 interview ahead of the Munich event. \u200d <\/p>\n<p>BMW executives\u200d did not disclose the total\u200d investment figures. The \u2063company \u2062is \u200cinvesting 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion)in new battery-making and assembly operations for the Neue Klasse at\u200d a plant in Hungary, one of the first factories to start building the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>When real Neue Klasse vehicles start to go down assembly\u200d lines in 2025, they will arrive 13 years \u200cafter Tesla launched the Model S \u2062and redefined the ultimate \u2064driving\u2062 machine for many affluent customers. Tesla and other EV startups\u2063 already use key elements of the Neue Klasse design, such as a battery pack \u200bthat forms part of the \u2064vehicle\u2019s body structure to reduce weight\u2062 and assembly cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018COMPETITIVE OFFER\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BMW\u2019s\u200c new\u200d compact models \u200cwill enter \u200ca competitive segment where \u2063Tesla has \u2062started a price war.\u200b BMW has not announced prices for the Neue Klasse.    <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be \u2064a very competitive offer,\u201d Chief Executive Oliver Zipse told reporters ahead of the show. \u2064\u201cWe will not price ourselves out \u200dof\u2062 this market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has also redrawn the business model around the vehicle \u2013 selling directly to customers, using over-the-air software upgrades to add features and constantly capturing\u2062 vehicle data to improve\u2063 driver\u2063 assistance and other features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a multi faceted transformation that needs to take place\u201d for established\u200b automakers such as BMW, said Evangelos Simoudis, a Silicon Valley venture \u200bcapital investor and expert on vehicle software strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Neue Klasse vehicles will be powered by 48-millimeter-diameter cylindrical batteries in different lengths. \u200dThe\u2063 batteries \u2062are similar in size and\u200c shape to those Tesla plans to use in its Cybertruck and other models. \u200b <\/p>\n<p>The Neue Klasse is targeting a 50% reduction in battery pack costs and 25% more range per kilowatt-hour, a measure of efficiency, executives\u2063 said.<\/p>\n<p>BMW has begun overhauling its Main assembly plant in Munich, \u200badjacent to the company\u2019s headquarters, to build Neue Klasse vehicles,\u200b which\u200d will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bmw-bets-on-a-neue-klasse-revival-to-catch-tesla\/\" title=\"BMW is banking on a 'Neue Klasse' comeback to rival Tesla.\">eventually replace current combustion \u2062models \u2063including<\/a> the 3-series sedan \u2064and X3 utility vehicles. <\/p>\n<p>The software systems\u2064 and battery technology behind the Neue \u2062Klasse vehicles will be as challenging for BMW as the manufacturing transformation, if not more so.<\/p>\n<p>Neue Klasse vehicles will have four \u201csuper brains,\u201d to control\u200d propulsion, driver \u2064assistance \u200csystems, infotainment and\u200c other functions, Weber said. BMW is developing the driver \u2062assistance system with chipmaker Qualcomm. It\u200c is developing \u200dthe propulsion and chassis controllers in-house, Weber said. <\/p>\n<p>BMW is rolling\u200c the dice on using head-up \u200bdisplays, projected on the windshield, to counter the large video screens Tesla, Mercedes and others\u2064 are using to pipe maps, music, conference calls and video games to drivers and passengers. Small head-up displays\u200b have been offered by\u200d automakers for\u200c years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are convinced head-up is the best \u200dway to display\u200c information,\u201d said Stephan Durach, senior vice president for connected company development.<\/p>\n<p>Developing the large-scale windshield\u2062 displays has not been easy, Durach said in an \u200binterview. \u201cIt goes deep into the overall architecture of the car.
