Ron DeSantis addressed members of the press from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Tallahassee to provide an \u200dupdate on \u2063the state&#8217;s recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by Florida Emergency Management (FEM) Director\u200b Kevin Guthrie,\u2064 Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez, \u2064and Florida \u200dDepartment of Children and\u2063 Families (DCF) Secretary Shevaun Harris, Mr.\u2062 DeSantis described the rapid progress recovery teams have made \u2064throughout the region to make sure residents have power, food, water, shelter, and can send their kids back to \u200bschool.<\/p>\n<p>The governor said <strong>476,000 power accounts have been restored<\/strong>, with 91,000 still left without electricity across the state.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Related Stories<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/health\/what-to-know-about-water-mold-and-disease-risks-during-a-hurricane-5484232\">What to Know About Water, \u200bMold, and Disease Risks \u200dDuring a Hurricane<\/a><br \/>\n      <br \/>\n      <span class=\"text-comp-caption\">8\/31\/2023<\/span>\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/irs-offering-relief-to-taxpayers-affected-by-hurricane-idalia-5484126\">IRS Offers\u200d Relief to Taxpayers Affected by Hurricane Idalia<\/a><br \/>\n      <br \/>\n      <span class=\"text-comp-caption\">8\/31\/2023<\/span>\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Duke\u200c Energy reported that <strong>95 percent of its customers across the state will have their power restored by \u2063tonight (Sept. 1)<\/strong>, 95 percent of all Duke specifically in Taylor and Columbia Counties,\u200b will have their power restored by Sept. 2, and 95 percent of all customers in Madison\u2064 and Hamilton\u200c Counties will be restored by \u2062the evening of\u2062 Sept. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Ms.\u2062 Nunez reported that\u2064 <strong>58 out of Florida&#8217;s 67 county school districts are open<\/strong>, and the state expects that number to grow over the weekend. She \u2064also said that 10\u2064 out of 12 universities are open, as well as 26\u200c out of 28 state \u200bcolleges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t forget that \u200cour children need to be back \u2063in the\u2063 classroom, and the\u2064 governor, as a young father himself, \u200cunderstands\u2062 that returning to normalcy for \u200bFlorida students is critically important,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our administration will be diligent to ensure that they \u200bhave the resources that they\u200d need \u2063and supply schools\u200c with whatever supplies that they&#8217;ll need in the coming days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. \u200dNunez will be visiting schools in Suwanee\u2063 and Hamilton Counties, impacted by the storm, \u200bwith Education Commissioner Manny \u2063Diaz, Jr.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>The Steinhatchee marina\u200b is seen flooded \u2062in \u200bSteinhatchee, Florida, on Aug.30, 2023, after Hurricane Idalia \u200cmade landfall. (Chandan Khanna\/AFP \u200bvia Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nine distribution \u200bpods are now open for residents who are in need of food, water, ice, or tarpaulins, said Mr. DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three pods are in\u2062 Suwannee County, two pods in\u200c Hamilton County, one in \u2064Madison,\u200d one in Taylor, \u2062one in Lafayette, and one in \u200bJefferson County.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Guthrie reiterated that five of\u2062 those nine\u2062 pods were opened by noon \u2063on Aug. 31, 36\u2064 hours after landfall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than 2100 vehicles visited these pods yesterday,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and received more than 48,000 liters of water and \u206273,700 MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Guthrie further emphasized Florida&#8217;s improved response time \u2064since Hurricane Ian.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yesterday we were at Horseshoe\u2062 Beach, and\u200b there was a couple of people \u2063that were post-disaster\u200c homeless,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And I&#8217;m happy \u2062to announce that\u2062 today we&#8217;re\u2062 going to move five trailers in \u200ca Horseshoe Beach today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So again, it took \u2064months \u200bfor us\u2062 to\u2063 get to that point\u200c after Hurricane Ian. And I&#8217;m\u200c happy\u200b to\u2064 announce that within 48\u2064 hours, we&#8217;re going to have travel trailers in that area for\u200d Horseshoe Beach, which is one of the most impacted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Working With the Private\u2063 Sector<\/h2>\n<p>Along with the efforts of Florida&#8217;s\u200c National Guard, Florida State \u2062Guard, and government agencies like the Department of Children and Families, \u200bthe \u2064Department of Transportation, and other State Emergency Response Teams, Mr. \u2064DeSantis also \u2063emphasized the credit to the \u200cstate&#8217;s ability to join forces with the private sector in this recovery effort.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sanders-right-wing-republicans-want-newsom-out-celebrity-chef-90-of-my-restaurant-owner-friends-are-dems-they-want-him-gone\/\" title=\"Sanders: \u2018Right-Wing Republicans\u2019 Want Newsom Out. (NOAA via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Private sector non-profits are also working hand-in-hand with the state\u200b to provide meal distribution, \u2064debris clearing, and \u2062more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going \u2063to be working on setting up \u200ca base camp in Horseshoe \u2063Beach &#8230; to provide housing and supply distribution sites\u2063 for our valued nonprofit providers,&#8221; Mr. Guthrie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These \u2062nonprofits are going \u2064to be going into assists \u200cwith items like muck [removal of mud, silt] and gut [clearing of damaged home materials] and also clearing up properties\u2014Mady&#8217;s Kitchens, Mercy\u2062 Chef, Operation Barbecue, Relief, Catholic Charities World Central Kitchen,\u200d and more and more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be all over the\u2062 ground in the \u2062coming days\u200b preparing meals for impacted residents, and I thank\u2064 them for their tireless efforts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Working with FEMA, Biden<\/h2>\n<p>After a visit from the\u2062 Federal Emergency Management\u2064 Agency (FEMA) administrator Deanne Criswell, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rand-paul-slams-nsa-demands-probe-into-alleged-tucker-carlson-espionage\/\" title=\"Rand Paul Slams NSA, Demands Probe Into Alleged Tucker Carlson Espionage\">federal government approved<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-issues-disaster-declaration-for-texas-amidst-severe-winter-weather\/\" title=\"Biden Issues Disaster Declaration For Texas Amidst Severe Winter Weather\">major disaster declaration<\/a> for seven Florida counties.<\/p>\n<p>And \u200cMr. DeSantis \u2063and \u200bMr. Guthrie hope \u200bthat more\u200b counties will be added to that list today, as one of the hardest-hit \u200bcounties, Madison\u2063 County, was\u2063 left off the list\u200d despite\u2062 recording a 100 percent power loss.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u200b is expected to visit Florida on Sept. 2.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the impending visit, \u2063Mr. DeSantis said that his primary concern is that the visit \u2062does not interrupt power restoration \u200band \u2064other relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One thing that I did mention\u200c to him on the phone is where these communities, the \u200bhardest hit commu<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been over 48 hours since Hurricane Idalia hit Florida.
