Federal laws governing\u2062 airlines require several steps\u2062 before a strike can occur.<\/p>\n<p>If the\u2062 company and the union fail \u200cto reach an\u200b agreement in federal \u200dmediation,\u2064 APFA could request to enter a\u200c 30-day cooling-off period. After this\u200d period, the \u2064attendants would be free to initiate a strike. Additionally,\u200d the president\u2063 and Congress have the power to intervene and potentially delay \u200bor block a strike.<\/p>\n<p>This vote follows American Airlines pilots authorizing a\u200c strike in May during their \u2064contract negotiations with the \u200dcarrier. However, last week, the \u200bpilots approved \u200ba \u2064new contract that will raise their pay by 40 percent\u2062 over four \u2064years, totaling more\u200d than $9.6 billion.
