Included on the committee is\u2064 Andrea Marpillero-Colomina, \u200da &#8220;spatial policy scholar&#8221;\u200d who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/urbandrea\/status\/1621944122209615879?s=20\">says<\/a> &#8220;ALL CARS ARE BAD&#8221; given\u200d that\u2063 they \u2064cause\u2062 &#8220;a myriad of environmental issues and conditions.&#8221; Another Buttigieg appointee,\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/veronicaodavis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-described<\/a> &#8220;transportation nerd&#8221; Veronica\u2063 Davis, <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcity.org\/urbanist-news\/when-it-comes-to-transportation-problems-all-roads-lead-back-to-cars\">argued<\/a> in an August essay\u2064 that\u200d cars perpetuate &#8220;systemic racism&#8221; and are therefore &#8220;the problem&#8221; in America&#8217;s transportation system.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg&#8217;s appointments\u2014and his decision to revive the equity advisory committee\u2014reflect the Biden administration&#8217;s whole-of-government emphasis on diversity, equity, \u200dand\u200b inclusion.\u2063 President Joe Biden shortly after\u200c taking office in 2021 issued \u200dan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-advancing-racial-equity-and-support-for-underserved-communities-through-the-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a> \u2063 that called\u2063 on federal agencies to &#8220;pursue a comprehensive approach\u2063 to advancing equity for all.&#8221; Under the\u200c order, agency heads must conduct an\u200d &#8220;equity\u200b assessment&#8221; to identify policies that\u2062 create\u200d &#8220;systemic barriers&#8221; in minority communities.<\/p>\n<p>The committee will advise Buttigieg \u2064on &#8220;promising practices to\u2064 institutionalize equity \u200cinto\u200c agency \u200dprograms, \u2063policies, regulations, and activities&#8221; and plans to meet for the\u200d first\u200b time this\u2062 fall, according to Buttigieg&#8217;s August \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/briefing-room\/secretary-buttigieg-appoints-members-advisory-committee-transportation-equity-acte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>. Marpillero-Colomina told the <em>Washington Free \u2062Beacon<\/em> that she is not &#8220;advocating for a complete erasure&#8221; of cars but intends to push \u2063Buttigieg to \u200cmove America away from its reliance on private motor vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My interest in being \u2062on\u200b the [equity committee] is to raise the question and push the Department of Transportation to really think about: What are some equitable, environmentally sustainable, economically beneficial, and\u200b feasible\u2064 alternatives\u200b to policy that is car-centric?&#8221; she said in an interview. &#8220;How can \u2063we reimagine streets to\u200b prioritize people instead of cars? How can we create streets that are inclusive \u200bof modes other than cars?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Davis, who did not\u200d return a request for comment, is likely to pursue \u2064similar goals on\u200b the committee. Davis in July released a <a href=\"https:\/\/islandpress.org\/books\/inclusive-transportation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book<\/a> titled, <em>Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities<\/em>, which advocates\u200d for &#8220;a different way of thinking&#8221; to &#8220;address healing the damage done \u2062by cars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not \u2062to\u2063 oversimplify the\u2063 problems of transportation, but all roads lead back to cars,&#8221; Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcity.org\/urbanist-news\/when-it-comes-to-transportation-problems-all-roads-lead-back-to-cars\">wrote<\/a> in an August essay adapted from her book. &#8220;This isn&#8217;t anti-car\u2062 propaganda but vehicles have wreaked havoc\u200b on the environment and communities. \u2026 Racism shaped the \u2062urban and \u2064suburban areas, where even today we see the\u200c residual effects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition\u200d to Marpillero-Colomina\u2063 and\u2062 Davis, \u200cButtigieg tapped\u2064 to serve on the committee Oliver Sellers-Garcia, who serves as Boston mayor Michelle Wu&#8217;s Green New Deal director. The \u2064city&#8217;s \u200bGreen\u200d New Deal\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/1hf11j69ure4\/B6NLxlOVxTVMNbHEvFaQE\/700f4762bae92990f91327a7e01e2f09\/Boston-Green-New-Deal-August-2020-FINAL.pdf\">program<\/a>, which Sellers-Garcia manages, calls for Boston to \u2062transition away from cars and embrace a &#8220;multimodal&#8221; plan of transportation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to make \u2062it not only \u2063possible but also preferable for residents to leave traffic-\u2062 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/all-cars-are-bad-pete-buttigiegs-equity-advisers-want-you-to-stop-driving\/\" title=\"Pete Buttigieg's advisers urge against driving: ALL CARS ARE BAD.\">pollution-inducing fossil fuel-powered vehicles<\/a> behind,&#8221; the city&#8217;s plan states.<\/p>\n<p>Neither \u200dSellers-Garcia nor\u2063 the Department of Transportation returned requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>This \u200bis far from the\u200d first time Buttigieg has shown an open hostility toward car \u2063transportation. Buttigieg&#8217;s agency in January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/biden-harris-administration-releases-first-ever-blueprint-decarbonize-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> a climate plan aimed at\u200c lowering the transportation sector&#8217;s\u200b carbon emissions. \u200cIncluded in the plan is a call to \u200breduce &#8220;commuting miles&#8221; through an &#8220;increase \u200din remote work and virtual engagements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The COVID-19 pandemic has\u200c highlighted major opportunities for telework, with some studies showing the possibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-floats-new-strategy-to-address-the-climate-crisis-dont-leave-your-house\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Floats New Strategy To 'Address the Climate Crisis': Don't Leave Your House\">10 percent long-term reduction<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-biden-climate-change-strategy-dont-leave-your-house\/\" title=\"New Biden Climate Change Strategy: Don't Leave Your House\">annual vehicle miles traveled<\/a>,&#8221; the\u200b plan says.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has similarly\u2063 moved to phase out gas-powered cars in favor of electric ones\u2014the Democrat&#8217;s Environmental Protection Agency and National \u2063Highway \u2062Safety Administration in recent months unveiled regulations \u200dthat would require automakers to\u2064 ensure that two-thirds of the vehicles\u200b they sell\u2062 are electric\u200b by 2032.
