The biggest \u2062part of the losses (37 percent) came from external theft, \u200baccording to \u2063the \u200bNRF report, which amounts to roughly $35 billion.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Violence is an increasingly important concern among retailers,&#8221; including shootings and\u200c assault, the report reads. &#8220;As has been detailed \u2063throughout this report, \u2064external theft and \u2064 [organized retail crime] in particular, is a significant\u200c and growing area \u2064of concern for retailers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Canepa plans to introduce legislation to \u2063form a task force in\u2062 San Mateo \u2062County, comprised of\u200d law enforcement and business community members, which\u200c would\u200c come up with new strategies\u2062 and sentencing guidelines &#8220;to \u2063combat these organized theft rings to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-associate-attorney-common-nominee-really-wants-to-eliminate-school-cops\/\" title=\"Biden Associate Attorney Common Nominee REALLY WANTS TO Eliminate School COPS\">enhance public safety<\/a> and protect the economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with CBS, Canepa expressed regret for backing Prop. 47, which downgraded certain thefts and drug offenses from felonies \u2064to misdemeanors. He originally supported the measure\u200c as an opportunity to give people serving \u2062long sentences for retail theft a second chance.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I thought it was\u2062 a good idea then because we need to \u2064give\u200d people an opportunity, \u2064we\u2063 need to give people a \u2064chance,&#8221; Mr. Canepa \u200btold CBS.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, \u200dwith the explosion of retail theft in California and elsewhere, Canepa now\u2064 acknowledges that he was wrong to \u200bback \u200bthe measure.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I made a mistake, it was a big mistake, and you\u2063 have to acknowledge your mistake. By\u200c doing this, what we&#8217;ve done is we&#8217;re letting people take\u200d thousands and thousands of dollars. And why should people be subjugated?&#8221; Mr. Canepa said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t go \u2062on like this,&#8221;\u2063 he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Canepa warned that criminal mobs have taken advantage of Prop. 47, knowing\u200b that if they get arrested, they can\u2062 simply walk out of jail the next day and only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/albany-county-sheriff-announces-investigation-into-gov-cuomo\/\" title=\"Albany County sheriff announces investigation into Gov. Cuomo\">face misdemeanor charges<\/a>. He urged \u2063lawmakers to reevaluate\u2063 the classification of what constitutes a felony\u200d to prevent\u2063 the\u200c near\u200b extinction\u200c of retailers like Nordstrom, which closed its\u200c flagship store in\u200b downtown San Francisco due to &#8220;unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to\u200d bolster law enforcement, including by re<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-democrat-regrets-backing-liberal-crime-bill-amid-retail-theft-epidemic\/\" title=\"CA Dem Regrets Supporting Liberal Crime Bill Amid Retail Theft 'Epidemic'\">-establishing minimum police staffing levels<\/a>, are being proposed to counteract some of the harm\u200b done by the post-George Floyd push to &#8220;defund&#8221; the \u200bpolice.
