Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.)\u2063 requested the assessment in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Their joint letter to the GAO emphasizes the importance of the NRC being prepared\u2064 to license and oversee the development and deployment of advanced reactors, which are cutting-edge systems that greatly improve upon designs built before 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This report\u2019s recommendations align with the Energy and Commerce \u2063Committee\u2019s bipartisan\u2062 legislative efforts and\u2062 reinforce \u200bthe need for a modern, efficient, predictable regulatory \u2063environment to ensure a robust nuclear \u2064industry,&#8221; said Rep. The report also questions the NRC&#8217;s current guidance on pre-application engagement with developers, creating uncertainty in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 GAO \u200creport further\u200c raises concerns about the \u200dNRC&#8217;s falling budgets for its Nuclear Reactor\u2062 Safety program, which have hindered its ability to attract technical talent.
