They believe that millions of students will be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Floyd, the president of the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP), stated that approximately 21 million students have participated in the program over its \u200b21-year history. Last year \u200balone, 1.3 million students in\u200c 9,000 schools learned the fundamentals of archery.<\/p>\n<p>The program has \u2064also awarded $3.4 \u200bmillion in scholarships to more than 2,000 students.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr. Floyd, the\u2064 lessons learned through these \u200dprograms extend beyond the archery range. (RubberBall \u2062Productions\/Brand X Pictures\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Democrats Hail BSCA<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, the \u2062U.S. Department of Education withheld funding based on its interpretation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), passed in June 2022.\u200b Democrats have hailed the law as\u200c the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-responds-to-new-gun-control-proposal-it-does-not-do-everything-that-i-think-is-needed\/\" title=\"Biden Responds To New Gun Control Proposal: \u2018It Does Not Do Everything That I Think Is Needed\u2019\">significant gun safety legislation<\/a> in the last 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Gun rights groups condemned Republicans who helped draft the legislation. This decision only sharpened that criticism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We warned folks when they passed this there would be unintended consequences. We \u200dgot provisions taken out [of the law] that were even worse,&#8221; said Mark Jones, the National Director for Hunter Outreach for Gun Owners of America.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even the architects of the legislation have said,\u200b &#8216;You are \u200cmisinterpreting our law.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and\u2062 Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) \u2063sent \u2062a letter on July 10 to Secretary of Education Michael Cardona, expressing their concerns about the misinterpretation of the BSCA.<\/p>\n<h2>GOP Claims Law Misinterpreted<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2064 were\u200c alarmed\u200c to\u2062 learn recently that the Department of Education &#8230; has misinterpreted the BCSA [sic] to require the defunding of certain longstanding educational and enrichment programs\u2014specifically, archery and hunter education classes\u2014for thousands of children, who rely on these programs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russell-brand-ben-shapiro-talk-parenting-pot-and-politics-in-new-episode-of-the-search\/\" title=\"Russell Brand, Ben Shapiro Talk Parenting, Pot, and Politics In New Episode of \u2018The Search\u2019\">develop life skills<\/a>, learn firearm safety,\u2063 and build self-esteem,&#8221; the letter reads.<\/p>\n<p>The BSCA was a response to mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, \u2064and Buffalo, New York. According to Mr. Cornyn \u2064and Mr. Tillis, the objective was to &#8220;protect America&#8217;s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce\u2064 the threat of violence across our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BSCA set aside $1 billion to &#8220;support safe \u2063and healthy students.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/pdf) (https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/117\/plaws\/publ159\/PLAW-117publ159.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a> \u2064prohibits using the money for &#8220;the provision to any person of a dangerous weapon&#8221; or &#8220;training in the use of a dangerous weapon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the senators, this meant training for school\u200d resource officers, which is funded separately.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/oese.ed.gov\/files\/2023\/04\/23-0083.BSCA-FAQs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidance<\/a> on the Department&#8217;s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education website, under the BSCA Stronger Connections Grant Program, states may<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>have the knowledge and skills to engage in hunting and archery,&#8221; said a critic.
