(Photo by ED JONES\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/james-meyers\">James Meyers<\/a><br \/>3:41 PM \u2013 Thursday, August 31, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>A nearly 200-year-old \u200dWest Point time capsule that was unlocked this week appeared at first to only contain dust during the live-streamed ceremony, however, it actually contained hidden treasures that were eventually uncovered, according to\u2062 the U.S. Military Academy. <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The contents revealed six silver \u200cAmerican coins dating from 1795 to 1828 and a commemorative medal, the military academy said in a press release. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the coins included a\u2062 1795 \u2064five-cent coin, an 1800 Liberty dollar, an 1818 25-cent coin, \u200cone-cent\u00a0 and\u2062 10-cent coins from 1827, an \u20621828 50-cent coin and\u2062 an Erie\u200b Canal commemorative\u2064 medal from 1826. <\/p>\n<p>According \u200cto experts, the long-lost coins are valued between a few-hundred dollars to over $1,000,\u200b depending on the\u200c condition. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWhen I first \u200bfound these, I thought, man you know, it would have been great to have found these on stage,\u201d West Point archeologist Paul Hudson told the Associated Press on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cBefore\u200d long,\u200b lo and behold, there\u2019s the edge of\u2064 a coin sticking out,\u201d \u200dhe recounted by \u200dphone, \u201cand I thought, well that\u2019s OK. That\u2019s something,\u2064 that\u2019s a start.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One theory is that the\u200c box was left at the bottom \u200dof \u200ba monument by cadets\u200d back in 1828. The \u200coriginal monument was erected to\u2063 honor a hero of the Revolutionary War, Thaddeus Kosciuszko. <\/p>\n<p>The historical preservation and analysis\u200b of the time capsule will reportedly\u200d continue to be explored further. <\/p>\n<p>More research will be done regarding the time\u200b capsule\u2019s historical preservation and study.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s more that we can learn from this,\u201d Hudson\u200b said, \u201cto learn about the academy\u2019s history \u200cand about the country\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay informed!
