The lab, known as the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), was notorious for its\u200b experiments on addiction using\u2062 substances\u2064 like nicotine, amphetamine, ketamine, and\u200c Ritalin.\u2064 While some monkeys \u200cwere \u200bretired to \u200ba sanctuary in 2018, the testing on other primates continued.<\/p>\n<h3>A Victory for\u200c Animal Rights Advocates<\/h3>\n<p>In\u2062 a recent\u2064 email confirmed by the White\u200d Coat \u200cWaste Project, it was revealed that the FDA has ceased using primate test subjects\u2063 at\u2063 the NCTR. This decision\u200c comes after years of \u2062advocacy by \u200dorganizations like the White Coat Waste Project, \u2064which estimated that the testing of\u2062 these\u200b monkeys cost \u2064taxpayers a staggering $5.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NCTR does not currently have a non-human primate program,&#8221; the email stated. &#8220;It was retired in December 2022.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cWhite Coat Waste\u200d Project, through Freedom of Information\u2064 Act requests, uncovered\u2063 the extent of these experiments, revealing that over 200 monkeys were subjected to testing\u200c each year. This revelation sparked outrage among\u2062 animal\u200c rights activists and \u2063prompted calls for change.<\/p>\n<h3>A Step Towards Progress<\/h3>\n<p>Representative\u200b Brendan Boyle (D-PA) expressed his satisfaction with the FDA&#8217;s decision, stating, &#8220;Painful testing on primates has no place in the\u200b 21st century when superior alternatives are available. I am thrilled that, following my years of advocacy\u200c with the White Coat\u200c Waste Project, the FDA has \u200cfinally shut down all of its primate experiments at the National Center for Toxicological Research.
