Thomas\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/abril-elfi\" target=\"_blank\">Abril Elfi<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>1:13 PM \u2013 Thursday, August 31, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>Five\u200c pro-life activists were convicted for blocking the \u2062entrance \u200cto an\u200d abortion clinic in Washington,\u200c D.C., as it is a violation of federal law.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, after \u200da\u200d day and a half of deliberation, jurors found campaigners Lauren\u200d Handy, Heather \u200dIdoni, William \u2063Goodman, John Hinshaw, and Herb Geraghty, guilty of \u200ctwo felony charges regarding conspiracy against rights and \u200cbreaking the Freedom\u2062 of Access to \u200cClinic Entrances (FACE) Act. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors\u200c identified Handy as the organizer and leader of the blockage back in October 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, \u200d2020, preventing patients from receiving care \u2063at the Washington Surgi-Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>According \u2062to witness\u200b testimony, \u2062the day before, anti-abortion activists from throughout the country flew to D.C. for a meet up.\u200b This \u2064is where Handy \u2062reportedly laid \u200cout the group\u2019s scheme and \u200bwarned her fellow protesters who\u200b planned \u2062to disrupt the\u2062 clinic to mentally\u2062 prepare\u200d since they could face arrest. <\/p>\n<p>Caroline Davis, an activist who was present at the conference, reported that Handy went so far as to describe the particular statute, the \u2064FACE\u200b Act, under which\u2063 those who blocked doors could be punished.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the event, Handy\u2062 and\u2063 anti-abortion activist Joan \u200bBell waited outside of the clinic door \u200dwhile other\u2064 activists, including\u200d her co-defendants, Geraghty\u200d and Goodman, hid in \u2062an emergency stairwell with \u2063a bag of locks and\u2064 chains.\u200b <\/p>\n<p>Handy\u2063 had scheduled \u200dan appointment using\u2064 the alias \u201cHazel Jenkins.\u201d \u200c <\/p>\n<p>When\u2063 a clinic staffer \u2064unlocked the door, \u2062the \u200dactivists rushed\u2064 out of the \u200bstairwell and forced their way into the building in a\u200b scuffle that reportedly sent one of \u2064the clinic employees to the hospital with an ankle injury. <\/p>\n<p>Surveillance footage also appeared\u2063 to show Handy \u2063directing other\u2063 protestors, who then put chairs in \u2064front of the entrance \u2062from\u200d the waiting room of the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>According to the footage, Bell and Paulette Harlow took chains\u200c from a\u2063 backpack and attached them to \u2063bike locks that\u2064 were worn around their necks. After that, \u2062they both sat in\u2064 chairs \u200bin front of \u200dthe door \u2064with other \u2062activists, \u200cincluding one of the defendants on \u200ctrial, Hinshaw, to\u200b establish a physical blockade. <\/p>\n<p>Additional activists had returned to \u200bthe \u2064corridor, where\u200b some \u2063stood in front of the clinic\u2019s personnel entrance and \u2063others tried to persuade \u200bclinic patients who were sitting and waiting \u2064for appointments to leave. <\/p>\n<p>On\u2062 a D.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-pro-life-activists-found-guilty-for-blocking-access-to-abortion-clinic\/\" title=\"5 Pro-Life Activists Convicted for Obstructing Abortion Clinic Access\">police body camera \u2063video<\/a>, one patient who testified in the case was seen becoming increasingly emotional,\u2062 shouting,\u2064 \u201cHow\u2064 is this \u2063legal?\u201d referring \u2062to the \u200dblockage. She\u200c was forced to climb through a \u200cwindow to\u200c make her way into the\u2063 reception area. <\/p>\n<p>Another \u2063patient claimed that she \u200chad\u2064 fainted \u200con the floor \u2062outside of the\u200b clinic while her husband pleaded with activists to let \u200bher\u2063 in.<\/p>\n<p>The blockage lasted more than three hours before police arrived and were \u200bable to \u2063relocate the group and move\u2064 them away from the facility. Before the activists could be apprehended, police used a \u200bsaw to \u2064cut off the bike \u200blocks that two of \u200cthe defendants had wrapped around their necks.<\/p>\n<p>Since jurors determined that the conspirators committed a violent felony by forcing their\u2062 way into the \u200dclinic, \u2062the judge ordered that all five \u200cbe detained while \u200btheir sentencing\u200b was pending. They could face up to 11 years in federal prison. <\/p>\n<p>There is no established date for the upcoming\u2064 hearing, however,\u200b Bell will reportedly go \u2064on trial with a second group \u2063of defendants next month.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
