(Photo by SAM YEH\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/roy-francis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roy Francis<\/a><br \/>12:56 PM \u2013 Thursday, August 31, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>The Biden administration has approved funding for the\u2064 first-ever \u200ctransfer of military weapons and equipment to \u200bTaiwan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The package totals \u200dto \u200caround $80 million and will be part of \u200bthe estimated $2 billion \u200dthat was set aside\u2062 for funding to Taiwan as \u2062part of the 2023 National \u2062Defense Authorization\u2064 Act (NDAA).<\/p>\n<p>The approval came under the \u200bState Department\u2019s Foreign Military Financing (FMF), a program that is typically reserved only for sovereign nations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cFMF will be used to strengthen Taiwan\u2019s\u2063 self-defense capabilities through joint and combined defense capability and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-approves-first-ever-military-aid-to-taiwan-through-program-usually-used-for-sovereign-nations\/\" title=\"Biden Admin greenlights historic military aid to Taiwan via program for sovereign nations.\">enhanced maritime domain awareness<\/a> and \u2063maritime security capability,\u201d the State Department notified Congress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A State Department spokesperson confirmed the approval of the transfer in a \u200cstatement to CNN.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cConsistent\u200c with\u2062 the Taiwan Relations Act and our longstanding One China policy,\u200b which has not changed, the United States makes available to Taiwan defense articles and services\u200c necessary to\u200c enable it to maintain a sufficient\u2063 self-defense capability,\u201d the statement read. \u201cThe United States has an abiding interest in peace and stability in the \u200dTaiwan \u200cStrait, which is critical to regional \u200dand global security and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The military aid package has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/green-premium-wall-streets-leftist-esg-standards-are-making-inflation-worse\/\" title=\"\u2018Green Premium\u2019: Wall Street\u2019s Leftist ESG Standards Are Making Inflation Worse\">drawn sharp criticism<\/a> from\u200c China, which considers Taiwan to\u2062 be part of its territory. \u200dChina\u2019s foreign\u2063 ministry expressed \u201cstrong \u200bdissatisfaction\u201d and firmly opposed the approval\u200c of the package. The ministry went on to say that military \u2062aid to Taiwan harmed \u201cChina\u2019s sovereignty and security interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin urged the U.S. to \u201ccease enhancing U.S.-Taiwan military connections and arming Taiwan,\u201d claiming that the actions of the U.S. are \u201ccreating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter that \u200cwas sent to Congress, the package will likely include\u2064 air and coastal defense systems, ballistic missile defense, cyber defense,\u2064 drones, military training, individual soldier protective gear, and\u2064 ammunition.<\/p>\n<p>According to The \u200dAssociated Press, this \u200bis the second time that the U.S. has provided military assistance\u2062 under the FMF program to a non-nation-state.
