I \u200dam proud to be\u2063 the only candidate for president \u2062who believes \u2063in true economic nationalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Universal Tariff<\/h2>\n<p>On\u2064 Aug. 17, President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-reaffirms-his-universal-tariff-proposal-if-elected-in-2024-post-5479059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave an interview<\/a> with former aide Larry Kudlow on Fox Business, where the two touched on some of the GOP frontrunner&#8217;s \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/agenda47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenda 47<\/a> \u2062policy proposals from his campaign. I think when companies\u200d come in and they dump their products in the United States, \u2064they should pay, automatically, let\u2019s say, a 10 percent tax,&#8221; President Trump said in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u200b money \u2064would be used to pay off debt. It&#8217;s a massive amount of money even at 10 percent,&#8221; the former president continued. \u201cIt&#8217;s \u200dnot gonna stop business because it&#8217;s not that much, but it&#8217;s enough that we would really make\u200c a lot of\u200b money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2062 pointed out \u2063that other \u200dcountries have put high taxes on\u2062 American goods, while the United \u2063States does not do the same, and suggested a universal tariff of &#8220;10 percent for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have countries that charge us 100 and 150 and 200\u2063 percent, and \u2062we charge \u200bthem \u2064absolutely nothing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2064 charge us, we charge them. Very\u200c simple,\u201d he added. &#8220;Now two things will happen\u2014one of \u200ctwo things: either they&#8217;ll wipe out the tax \u200dand so will we, or we&#8217;ll take in a lot \u200dof money, and that&#8217;s OK, too. \u2063But eventually, what they\u2019ll do is they\u2019ll stop\u200b doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Editorial<\/h2>\n<p>Media criticism followed, with \u200doutlets like The Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/08\/22\/trump-trade-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Post<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wsj.com\/articles\/donald-trump-10-percent-tariffs-trade-war-benjamin-harrison-69ba4c2a?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WSJ<\/a> claiming the tariff plan was one that would lead to a &#8220;trade\u200d war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This \u200dis worth taking\u200c literally and seriously because Mr. Trump meant what he \u200dsaid about tariffs when \u2062he \u2064ran for President in 2016,&#8221; the WSJ editorial\u200c board wrote. &#8220;He imposed taxes on imports\u2064 ranging from steel and aluminum to solar panels\u2062 and washing machines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-defends-tariff-plan-after-criticism\/\" title=\"Trump stands by tariff plan despite criticism.\">affecting imports worth hundreds<\/a> of billions of dollars\u2063 when the border taxes were implemented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Protectionists pitch tariffs as a tax\u2064 on other countries, but American consumers\u2063 pay the price,&#8221;\u200b the board continued, \u200dciting a Tax Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/research\/all\/federal\/tariffs-trump-trade-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> that estimated \u2063the cost to Americans to be some\u2063 $80 billion and 166,000 full time jobs. They point out that \u200cthe trade deficit rose during the course \u200bof President \u200cTrump&#8217;s time in office, and continued to \u200cdo so under President\u2064 Biden, and hence a universal tariff would do \u200clittle to \u2062curb the trade deficit and improve the economy.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump wrote a brief response that was published in the same publication about a week\u2063 later, pushing back against \u200ctheir claims.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Price increases for consumers were virtually\u200b nonexistent and there was effectively\u2064 no inflation when I was president. The trade deficit with China was down year-over-year for five straight quarters before Covid hit in 2020,&#8221; he \u2063wrote. He contrasted this with the growing trade deficit under President Biden, which has hit &#8220;record highs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>President Joe Biden speaks in Washington on Aug. 30, 2023. (Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/biden-administration-rejects-trumps-10-percent-universal-tariff-proposal-for-foreign-imports-5479912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> the\u2063 universal 10 percent tariff\u200c plan in a statement a week after the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"person-popover\">President Biden <\/span>s<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>, the same people now claim that tariffs are bad for our country,&#8221; Trump wrote. He argued that his tariffs had brought billions of dollars into the US and protected American industries.
