Progressive ideas for law enforcement, like zero bail, have done nothing\u200d to keep our communities safe and have given\u200c criminals the green light to continue to victimize\u200c our communities across the \u2062state\u200b with little or no\u2063 consequences.<\/p>\n<p>We see firsthand the consequences of these \u201creform\u201d\u2063 measures \u200din Oakland, where \u2063the Alameda County District Attorney (DA), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/move-to-recall-soft-on-crime-northern-california-county-district-attorney-underway-5477052?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_campaign=digitalsub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pamela Price<\/a>, faces a recall\u2062 campaign for taking a soft-on-crime approach, resulting \u2064in dire consequences for the\u2062 community&#8217;s safety. No one should live in fear in our\u200d city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of &#8220;restorative justice&#8221;\u2064 policies, Oakland&#8217;s homicide \u2064count was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/demianbulwa\/status\/1687562243049918464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> up by\u2062 80 percent in July\u2014compared to \u200b2019. \u2063Assaults and robberies were up by 40 percent and 20 percent, respectively. \u200bUnfortunately, statistics\u2063 like \u200dthese \u2064are not\u2063 limited to Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last \u2064decade, California\u2019s progressive, soft-on-crime laws have made many communities \u2062more \u2062dangerous. Each year,\u2062 new reform laws are \u200dpassed by \u2064the legislature to downgrade serious felonies to misdemeanors with \u2063reduced sentences. This year, one bill in particular\u2062 stands out. Senate Bill 94 was introduced to allow certain inmates (the worst\u200b of the \u2063worst) serving life without the possibility of parole to\u200b be resentenced by the courts. Combined with the new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/downloads\/research\/criminal\/wmra21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elder parole<\/a>\u201d rules, \u200cSB 94 would allow for the release of many\u2062 of\u200c these inmates who are\u2062 over\u200b 50 years old and have served only 20 years \u2064in custody.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>A condemned \u200cinmate\u200c is led out\u200c of his east block cell on death row at\u200d San Quentin State Prison, in San Quentin, Calif., in \u200da file image. (Eric Risberg\/AP \u2062Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>If \u200bthat isn\u2019t enough of a concern, it additionally\u2064 goes against the will of the voters.\u2062 In 1990, Californians passed Proposition\u2063 115 \u200bwhich amended the State Constitution to require a sentence of death, or life in prison without the\u2064 possibility of\u200b parole for a\u2062 conviction of first-degree murder with special circumstances. Any change to life without parole for first-degree murder \u200bmust be approved by the\u200b voters.<\/p>\n<p>By moving SB 94 through the legislative process, the Legislature \u2062is seeking to overturn these sentences and potentially thousands of verdicts \u2064by jurors\u2014not\u2064 by a vote of\u2064 our\u2064 citizens but by \u200bthe super-majority of the state Legislature. For \u2064more than 40 \u2062years,\u2062 prosecutors and judges have \u200dtold \u200bthe \u200bfamilies \u200dthat\u200b the killers convicted\u2064 of murder with special circumstances and sentenced to\u2063 life without\u2062 parole that \u200c\u201cthe killer\u2064 of your loved one \u2062will\u2063 never get out of prison to kill again.\u201d\u200d Passing SB 94 will make them liars and \u200cre-traumatize victims\u2019 families all over again.<\/p>\n<p>An example of a convicted killer that may be released if SB 94 passes is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocweekly.com\/michael-goodwin-relieved-his-conviction-for-mickey-thompson-murders-is-upheld-6440876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Goodwin<\/a>. He was convicted of the\u200d 1988 execution\u200c murder of Hall of Fame race car driver Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy and sentenced\u2064 to life without\u2063 the \u2062possibility of parole. Goodwin would soon be eligible for release.<\/p>\n<p>Society will not be safe from\u2062 these\u200c killers if \u2062SB \u200d94 \u2063is \u2063passed.\u202fCalifornia is at a \u200bcriminal justice crossroads. The implementation of lenient policies and the lack of consequences for criminals have contributed to the alarming increase in crime rates in California.
