(Photo by \u2063Stephanie Keith\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/james-meyers\">James Meyers<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>12:10 PM \u2064\u2013 Thursday, August 31, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>A former Proud Boys \u200cleader who was convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> protest was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Thursday. <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Biggs, an Army veteran, received one of the \u2063longest sentences in all of the demonstration cases.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 January \u200b6<sup>th<\/sup> committee was \u2064originally seeking 33 years for Biggs.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Biggs was injured \u2062in combat in \u200bIraq during his years of service and he had later served as a correspondent on Alex Jones\u2019\u2063 InfoWars website. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The committee argued that he was a \u201cvocal leader and influential proponent of the group\u2019s shift toward political \u200dviolence\u201d and\u2063 used\u200c his \u201coutsized \u200cpublic profile\u201d and his military experience as he \u201cled a revolt against the government in an effort \u2063to stop the peaceful transfer of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who \u200chanded down Biggs\u2019 \u2063sentence, argued that\u2063 his\u2062 alleged tearing down of a fence that stood between police and rioters put him in the category of a\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-proud-boys-leader-joe-biggs-sentenced-to-17-yrs-in-prison-for-jan-6-involvement\/\" title=\"Ex-Proud Boys leader Joe Biggs gets 17-year prison term for Jan. 6 role.\">terrorism sentencing enhancement sought<\/a> by the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> \u2062committee. <\/p>\n<p>The sentencing dates back \u2063to May when\u2062 Biggs was convicted of \u200dseditious \u200bconspiracy,\u2063 conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to use force, intimidation or threats to prevent officers of the U.S. from discharging their duties, interference with law enforcement during civil disorder and destruction of government property.<\/p>\n<p>The Army veteran went on trial along with five other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/mpd-lt-charged-with-obstruction-of-justice-false-statements\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/mpd-lt-charged-with-obstruction-of-justice-false-statements\/\">Proud Boy<\/a> members, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/proud-boys-members-ex-leader-enrique-tarrio-found-guilty\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/proud-boys-members-ex-leader-enrique-tarrio-found-guilty\/\">Enrique Tarrio<\/a>,\u200b Ethan Nordean, Zachary Rehl, and Dominic Pezzola. <\/p>\n<p>The other members\u2064 will be \u200bsentenced \u200bin the coming \u200bdays with Rehl on Thursday, Nordean and Pezzola on Friday, and Tarrio on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Before he received his sentence, Biggs apologized for his role in the\u200b January 6<sup>th<\/sup> protest.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI apologize \u200cfor my rhetoric,\u201d Biggs said, he used it as a way to cope with finding \u200bout\u2064 his daughter was \u200cmolested by a member of his \u200dfamily. \u200b\u201cI\u2019m so sorry, I\u2019m not a terrorist, I don\u2019t have hate in my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m\u2063 done \u2064with it. I\u2019m sick and \u200ctired of left versus right,\u201d Biggs said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Biggs\u2019 lawyer, Norm Pattis, said crimes had been committed\u2062 by his client but that they were \u201coverstated.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cTo treat these\u200d men as terrorists\u2064 would be, in my view, the functional equivalent \u200bas the destruction of Waco,\u201d Pattis said. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Judge Kelly ended the sentencing saying \u200dJanuary\u200b 6<sup>th<\/sup> ruined the transfer of power from\u2063 one President to another. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWhat happened\u200d on\u200b January 6<sup>th<\/sup> harmed an important American custom that helps support the rule of law and the constitution,\u201d he said. \u201cThat day broke our tradition of peacefully transferring power which is among the most \u2062precious things that\u200d we had as Americans.
