As early \u200das May of this year, Mr. Yang authored a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/05\/17\/vivek-ramaswamy-how-you-win-00097211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico article<\/a> \u2064titled &#8220;9 Ways Vivek Ramaswamy Can\u200d Beat Donald Trump.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an Aug. 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewyang.com\/blog\/trump-vs-the-field\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>, Mr. Yang wrote that Mr.\u2064 Ramaswamy &#8220;has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-ramaswamy-reminds-some-of-andrew-yang-how-does-this-comparison-stack-up\/\" title=\"Ramaswamy's resemblance to Yang sparks analysis: How does this comparison hold up?\">genuine grassroots enthusiasm \u2063based<\/a> \u2064on a distinct and\u2014to\u200c Republicans\u2014positive message,&#8221; arguing that he is the\u200c GOP hopeful \u2063best positioned to beat the last GOP president. \u2062In a follow-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewyang.com\/blog\/how-trump-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> \u200b on Aug. 21, Mr. \u200dYang stressed that he believes Mr. Ramaswamy\u2064 is &#8220;the most likely candidate to break [out], potentially at the \u2064Republican debate this week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, Mr. Ramaswamy&#8217;s energetic performance in Milwaukee\u200c garnered\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-free-gop-means-more-ramaswamy-trends-and-highlights-of-the-first-debate-5479871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headlines and attention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Republican presidential candidate former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence (L.) shakes hands with Vivek Ramaswamy (R.) during the first debate of\u2063 the \u200bGOP primary season\u2062 hosted by \u2063FOX\u2064 News \u2063at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisc., on Aug. 23, \u200c2023. (Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Both Men &#8216;Wonky,&#8217; Adept in Digital\u2062 &#8216;Attention Economy&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Comparisons are\u200b natural,\u2064 but it&#8217;s important to understand they \u200dare different people,&#8221; a Yang 2020 campaign insider told The \u2062Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re talented, diverse, \u200ca similar age\u2013Vivek a little younger,&#8221; the insider, who asked not to be \u200bnamed, said in a telephone interview on Aug. 16, a week before the debate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re both\u2063 very capable arguers with \u200ca\u200b compelling\u200c message.\u200c And it&#8217;s\u200b a little nerdy and wonky, right?\u200d They&#8217;re not afraid to get into\u200b numbers and facts and figures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Noting that \u200cthere are \u2064obvious ideological differences\u200c between the two men, the campaign insider said Mr. Ramaswamy &#8220;is much further right&#8221; than Mr. Yang.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to promoting UBI, a redistributive policy that he justified by <a href=\"https:\/\/2020.yang2020.com\/what-is-freedom-dividend-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citing the threat<\/a> to jobs of \u200dautomation, Mr. Yang&#8217;s 2020\u200d platform included a net\u200b zero by 2049 goal and advocacy for &#8220;a stringent licensing system&#8221; for guns, among other positions that generally placed him on the\u200d left in\u2064 America.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ramaswamy,\u200b by contrast, \u200csaid\u2063 in Milwaukee \u200dthat &#8220;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-climate-agenda-wont-replace-jobs-it-seeks-to-kill-separate-ap-wapo-fact-checks-suggest\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Climate Agenda Won\u2019t Replace Jobs It Seeks To Kill, Separate AP, WaPo Fact-Checks Suggest\">climate change agenda<\/a> is a hoax.&#8221; In addition, he \u200chas voiced <a href=\"https:\/\/tennesseestar.com\/news\/republican-presidential-candidate-vivek-ramaswamy-wows-nra-crowd-in-second-amendment-defense\/mkittle\/2023\/04\/15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposition to<\/a> \u200d &#8220;a gun registry \u2062or shadow database&#8221; and wants to shut down the Bureau\u2064 of Alcohol, \u200dTobacco, and Firearms (ATF).<\/p>\n<p>The Yang campaign\u200b insider suggested that Mr. \u2063Ramaswamy may\u2063 benefit more from his outsider status than Mr. Yang did.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many Republicans don&#8217;t \u2064like government. So government experience and establishment blessing \u200cis not an\u2063 asset to \u2063them,&#8221; the\u2064 insider said, contrasting\u200c that with more\u200b pro-government attitudes among \u200cDemocrats.<\/p>\n<p>One \u2063of the biggest similarities\u200d the Yang campaign insider sees is a talent for navigating and\u200c activating the digital world. In \u2062Mr. Yang&#8217;s case, online supporters known as the &#8220;Yang\u2062 Gang&#8221; boosted \u200dhis profile, especially among younger voters. \u200cIn\u200b Mr. Ramaswamy&#8217;s case, frequent posts on Twitter\/X and other \u200bplatforms have allowed him\u2063 to \u200dconnect more\u200d directly with his \u2063audience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both use Twitter in particular, but \u200bsocial \u2063media in general,\u2062 very effectively to \u2063get their message across,&#8221;\u2062 the campaign insider said. &#8220;They know how to compete in the attention economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Andrew\u200c Yang speaks during a\u2063 Democratic presidential primary\u200d debate at\u200c Saint Anselm\u200c College in Manchester, N.H., \u2064on Feb. 7, 2020. (AP Photo\/Elise Amendola)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Both &#8216;Ahead \u2062of Their Time&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Peter Boghossian, a philosopher \u200band public \u2063intellectual\u200b known as a critic \u200cof &#8220;grievance studies,&#8221; also sees parallels between Mr.\u2064 Yang and \u200cMr.\u2062 Ramaswamy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re \u2064both extremely intelligent and very, very good \u200bon their feet,&#8221; Mr. Boghossian told The Epoch Times\u2064 in an Aug. 17 \u200dphone interview.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Boghossian was one\u2064 of many \u200dhigh-profile \u2064Andrew Yang supporters during his \u200cpresidential run.<\/p>\n<p>In his\u200c interview with The\u2062 Epoch Times, he emphasized that he does\u200d not endorse any\u2063 candidate this cycle.<\/p>\n<p>He said he backed\u200d Mr. Yang \u200dbecause the UBI advocate was &#8220;smart, digitally savvy, honest, forthright, not overly partisan, [and] willing to step across divides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like the Yang campaign\u2064 insider, he believes Mr.\u200b Ramaswamy&#8217;s aptitude for digital technologies sets him apart from the competition in a Yang-like way.<\/p>\n<p>Like\u2062 Mr. Yang, he predicted\u2062 Mr. Ramaswamy would stand \u200dout when placed alongside\u2064 the other \u2063Republicans gunning for the presidency. In his \u2063case, the critique extends beyond \u2063the GOP\u200c field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imagine\u2064 either one of those individuals, Vivek or Andrew, debating literally\u200d anybody else in the\u200d race. It would \u200cbe a bloodbath,&#8221; Mr. Boghossian said, adding that he could see them besting President Joe\u200c Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, or\u200b Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, among others\u2014&#8221;basically anybody.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Boghossian said he&#8217;s still\u2062 &#8220;extremely sympathetic&#8221; to UBI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/openai-founder-launches-cryptocurrency-offering-tokens-in-exchange-for-eye-scans\/\" title=\"OpenAI founder introduces crypto, trades tokens for eye scans.\">universal basic \u200cincome<\/a> also\u2062 comes with some cuts in the\u200d welfare\u2064 and regulatory apparatus as\u2064 well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Yang&#8217;s campaign was\u200c known \u2064for its relatively narrow focus on \u200ca single\u200d concern\u2013automation. And\u200c a\u200d policy prescription intended \u200bto fix it\u2013UBI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people \u200bare worried about the future of work due to factors like technological unemployment \u200band \u2062the precariousness of work in the &#8216;gig economy,'&#8221; said Matt \u200cZwolinski, a UBI advocate and a professor of philosophy\u2063 at the University of San Diego,\u200d in\u200d an email interview with The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Zwolinski said that a UBI program would have to\u200d be expensive to prove effective.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is a\u2063 serious problem both from an economic \u200dand a political perspective,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ramaswamy is harder to peg \u200cas a single-issue candidate, yet \u200dhe too has distinguished \u2064himself through \u200bcreative policy \u200dproposals\u2014for example, a vision of &#8220;civic duty voting&#8221; that would impose requirements on 18- to 25-year-olds seeking the franchise.\u200b He&#8217;s also helped push the \u200bwider GOP \u200bfield \u2064toward \u200dscaling\u200c back or outright eradicating federal agencies, including \u200cthe Department of Education and the \u2064FBI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They \u200bhave\u200d fundamentally\u200b different positions, but what unites\u200d them is these\u200c are radical ideas or ideas \u200cwell ahead of their time,&#8221; Mr. Boghossian\u2062 said.<\/p>\n<h2>A Yang-Like Fate in\u200c Question<\/h2>\n<p>One obvious question\u200d remains:\u2063 As Mr. Ramasw<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>as Medium.
