On several occasions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/crowd-roars-oliver-anthony-opens-show-bible-verse-foretelling-fall-wicked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony<\/a> \u2064 has even opened his concerts by reading passages from Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly a century, the same phenomenon has occurred in the world of sports. In \u200cfact, five Christian athletes and coaches in particular have shown immense \u2062courage and humility\u200c in the\u200c name of faith.\u200b Their examples\u2064 deserve remembrance.<\/p>\n<h3>Eric Liddell<\/h3>\n<p>In 1924, Scottish runner Eric Liddell won a gold medal\u2064 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-democrat-attacks-trans-bill-claims-there-are-6-sexes-mother-of-girl-athlete-fires-back-we-must-put-facts-before-feelings\/\" title=\"Texas Democrat Attacks Trans Bill, Claims There Are 6 Sexes. Mother Of Girl Athlete Fires Back: \u2018We Must Put Facts Before Feelings\u2019\">400-meter dash<\/a>\u200c at the Summer\u2064 Olympics in Paris. Liddell made \u200dnews,\u2064 however, when he refused to run\u200d in the 100-meter \u200bdash \u2014 scheduled on a Sunday \u2014 because he would not \u200dbreak his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-judge-sides-christian-told-truth-male-claiming-female\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian<\/a> commitment to honor\u2063 the Sabbath.<\/p>\n<p>The 1981 Academy Award-winning film \u201cChariots of \u200cFire\u201d told the story of Liddell\u2019s courage at the 1924 Olympics. But that \u2064courage manifested throughout Liddell\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan Hamilton\u2019s 2016 biography, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glory-Untold-Inspiring-Liddell-Chariots\/dp\/0143110187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For the Glory: \u200bEric\u2062 Liddell\u2019s Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr<\/a>,\u201d showcased the legendary \u200bChristian athlete\u2019s\u2063 faith under devastating circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/reviews\/for-the-glory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a> of Hamilton\u2019s book by The Gospel Coalition, an online repository for Christian documents and\u200c resources, Liddell devoted his post-Olympics life to\u2062 Christian missionary work in China. During World War II, Liddell suffered\u200b confinement in an \u2063internment camp under Japanese \u200boccupation but did not allow his\u2064 ordeal to alter his Christian commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, \u2063while detained by the Japanese, Liddell \u2063lived his faith. In fact, accounts from survivors \u201coverflow with praise for Liddell\u2019s integrity and unselfishness.\u201d Liddell died of a brain tumor shortly before war\u2019s end in 1945.<\/p>\n<h3>Jackie Robinson<\/h3>\n<p>Jackie Robinson\u2019s debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, broke the color\u2063 barrier in Major \u2063League Baseball. Today, Robinson ranks \u200das\u2064 the most important and arguably \u2064the most famous\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-mlb-pitcher-forced-leave-game-scary-shot-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ballplayer<\/a> \u200dof the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>The role of faith in\u2063 Robinson\u2019s life, however, \u200bhas received less \u200battention than it deserves. In fact, Robinson needed his \u200cChristian\u200c beliefs to help him endure the ugly taunts\u200d and ostracism \u2062he received from segregationists.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/journal\/article\/jackie-robinsons-faith-sustained-him-during-unrelenting-turmoil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society for American Baseball Research<\/a>, Robinson found courage in Jesus\u2019 teachings. The Gospel of Matthew, in particular, sustained him: \u201c\u201cYou have heard that it hath been said, an \u2062eye for an eye,\u2062 and a tooth for a tooth: But I\u2064 say unto you, That\u2064 ye resist not evil; but \u2063whosoever shall smite \u2062thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson\u2019s upbringing had prepared him to rely on the Gospel. Rev. Karl Downs, a young \u2064Methodist minister in Pasadena, California, exerted tremendous influence on young Jackie. Downs ensured, in the words of one Robinson \u200cbiographer, that \u201cFaith in God then began to register in him as both a mysterious force, beyond his comprehension, and a pragmatic way to negotiate the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chris-pratt-shows-dodgers-faith-family-day-affirms-power-christianity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers<\/a> general manager Branch Rickey \u2013 -himself a Methodist like Robinson \u2014 did not \u200dchoose his barrier-busting ballplayer by accident.<\/p>\n<p>Rickey chose Robinson for his talent but also for a faith Rickey \u2063knew the young man would need.<\/p>\n<h3>John Wooden<\/h3>\n<p>Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden presided over one of \u2064the greatest sports dynasties in history. In a 12-year period \u2064from 1964 to 1975, Wooden\u2019s Bruins won 10 NCAA championships, including seven consecutive. His record\u200c included an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-christ-used-sports-history-to-spread-his-glory-5-powerful-moments\/\" title=\"Christ's Glory Spread Through Sports History: 5 Impactful Moments\">astonishing 88-game\u2064 winning streak<\/a> from 1971 to 1974. It turns out that both of these inspirational qualities had a familiar source.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Wooden\u2019s death in 2010 at the age of 99, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/blogs\/jacket-copy\/story\/2010-06-04\/our-five-favorite-john-wooden-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los\u200c Angeles \u2062Times<\/a> published a list of its five favorite books by Wooden, including the self-help book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Coach-Woodens-Pyramid-Success-Building\/dp\/0830737189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coach Wooden\u2019s Pyramid of Success: Building Blocks for a Better Life<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baptistpress.com\/resource-library\/news\/first-person-john-wooden-the-christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baptist Press<\/a>, news outlet for\u200c the Southern Baptist Convention, Wooden\u2019s entire philosophy,\u200c as spelled out \u200bin \u201cPyramid of Success\u201d is \u2062\u201canchored in God\u2019s\u200c Word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve trusted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chris-pratt-shows-dodgers-faith-family-day-affirms-power-christianity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christ<\/a>, and I\u2019ve \u2064tried to live as He would have me live,\u201d Wooden wrote. \u201cI\u2019ve studied His word,\u2064 and\u2063 I\u2019ve prayed a \u200bgreat deal. I have faith He will do\u2063 what He\u2019s promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Tim\u200b Tebow<\/h3>\n<p>The 2007 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback of the Florida Gators ranks as perhaps the most recognizable Christian athlete of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Tebow\u2019s professional career as quarterback of the Denver Broncos peaked with an overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers\u200b in the 2011 AFC wildcard game. The Broncos\u2019 \u2063improbable \u2062playoff run made Tebow a national phenomenon. It showcased the quarterback\u2019s signature act\u200b of humility and faith \u2014 what became known as \u201cTebowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before, \u2063during and after games \u2013 -whenever \u200dhe felt the need to communicate with God \u2014 Tebow knelt, placed his elbow on his knee and touched his fist to his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3ngeMsyG8iw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 interview<\/a> with ESPN\u2019s Hannah Storm \u2014 broadcast on ABC before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/super-bowl-champ-message-written-tie-stood-behind-biden-wh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Bowl<\/a> \u2014 the quarterback explained \u201cTebowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber one, it\u2019s definitely a personal conversation between me and the Lord, but then, you know,\u2064 also it\u2019s not being ashamed of my faith,\u201d Tebow said.<\/p>\n<h3>Jonathan Isaac<\/h3>\n<p>When\u2062 the NBA returned from its pandemic-induced hiatus\u200c in the summer of 2020, Orlando Magic small forward Jonathan Isaac made \u2062headlines by refusing to wear a \u2064\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/blm-crashing-hard-support-drops-off-cliff-americans-reach-race-fatigue-new-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Lives Matter<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-nevada-a-corrupt-cash-for-votes-scheme-is-hiding-in-plain-sight\/\" title=\"In Nevada, A Corrupt Cash-For-Votes Scheme Is Hiding In Plain Sight\">t-shirt<\/a> or to kneel for the American national anthem. Isaac, in fact,\u200c was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lone-nba-player-refuses-kneel-doesnt-wear-blm-shirt-gives-perfect-response-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only player<\/a> who took this stance.<\/p>\n<p>After that\u200c first game, Issac explained why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that kneeling or putting on a T-shirt for me personally is the answer. I feel like,\u2063 for me, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">black lives<\/a> are supported through the gospel. All \u200blives are\u2064 supported through the gospel,\u201d Isaac said.<\/p>\n<p>Every public \u200cdisplay of faith requires courage. That is never more true than when the faithful man stands alone, as Isaac did.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/christians-celebrate-jesus-revolution-rockets-netflixs-top-5-trending-charts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christ<\/a> speaks to\u2063 us \u2062through many different messengers.
