that he intended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-denies-president-trump-request-to-invoke-executive-privilege-on-documents-regarding-jan-6-protests\/\" title=\"Biden denies President Trump request to invoke executive privilege on documents regarding Jan. 6 protests\">invoke executive privilege<\/a> over communications \u200cwith Mr. Navarro, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-rejects-key-defense-for-former-trump-adviser-peter-navarro-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c judge, however, ruled \u2062that there was insufficient evidence that President\u2064 Trump had intended to invoke privilege, and\u2063 thus ruled that Mr. Navarro would be prohibited from disclosing \u200bthis to a\u200d jury,\u2063 essentially blocking Mr. \u2062Navarro from his key defense in the case.<\/p>\n<p>At the hearing, Mr. Navarro \u2064told Judge Mehta that he\u2063 had spoken\u2063 to President Trump on Feb. 20, 2022, roughly 11 days\u2064 after the panel\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/jan-6-committee-subpoenas-former-trump-aide-peter-navarro-4268659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued a subpoena<\/a> \u2063 against him.<\/p>\n<p>During a three-minute call with\u200d the president, Mr.\u200d Navarro told the judge that &#8220;it was clear during that call that privilege was\u200b invoked, very clear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At a later meeting\u2064 with President Trump\u200c on April 5, 2022, Mr. Navarro said, the\u2063 president sent \u2062the \u200dsame message.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was no \u200cquestion that privilege had been invoked from the \u200dget-go,&#8221; Mr. Navarro said.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Mehta earlier elected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/judge-delays-peter-navarro-contempt-of-congress-trial-over-executive-privilege-claims-5019540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delay the trial<\/a> so that \u2062the matter of executive privilege could be considered.<\/p>\n<p>With \u200dhis\u2063 key defense \u200cnow declared inadmissible \u200cby a judge, it is unclear how Mr. Navarro&#8217;s defense will play out in court.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u200d Navarro\u2064 was \u2062charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/house-jan-6-panel-advances-charges-against-peter-navarro-dan-scavino-4369090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contempt of Congress<\/a> by the House\u200c Jan. 6 panel in March 2022 alongside Dan Scavino. The panel also\u200c advanced contempt of Congress charges \u200bagainst Mr. Bannon.<\/p>\n<p>These charges were later\u2062 sent to President Joe Biden&#8217;s Department of Justice by the then-Democrat controlled House of\u2062 Representatives in a \u2062series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-rejects-executive-privilege-defense-in-peter-navarros-contempt-of-congress-case\/\" title=\"Judge denies executive privilege defense in Navarro's contempt case.\">party-line\u200b votes<\/a>.\u2063 Attorney General Merrick Garland elected to press charges in\u200c each case.<\/p>\n<p>Each man who \u2063refused to comply with the subpoena invoked executive \u200cprivilege to back the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u2062Navarro&#8217;s lawyer told The Epoch Times he had no further comment about the outcome of the hearing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge dismissed a crucial defense in Peter Navarro&#8217;s contempt of Congress case.
