Cherney<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The U.S. has expanded its restrictions on the export of \u2063sophisticated \u2063Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices artificial-intelligence chips beyond China to other regions, including some countries in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia said in a regulatory filing this week that the curbs, which affect its A100 and H100 chips\u2062 designed to speed up machine-learning tasks, would \u200cnot have an \u201cimmediate material impact\u201d\u2064 on its results.\u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Rival AMD also received an informed letter with similar restrictions, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding that the move has no material impact on its revenue.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. officials usually impose export\u200c controls for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hillbilly-elegy-author-jd-vance-confirms-hes-seriously-considering-senate-run-in-ohio\/\" title=\"\u2018Hillbilly Elegy\u2019 Author JD Vance Confirms He\u2019s Seriously Considering Senate Run In Ohio\">national security reasons<\/a>. A similar move announced last year\u200c signaled an \u200bescalation of the U.S.\u2064 crackdown on China\u2019s technological capabilities, but it was not immediately clear what risks were posed by exports to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>In a \u200dseparate statement, Nvidia said the new licensing requirement \u201cdoesn\u2019t affect\u2064 a\u2064 meaningful portion of our revenue. We are working\u200c with the U.S. government to address\u2064 this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 U.S. Commerce Department, which normally administers new licensing requirements on exports, did not\u2064 immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Last \u200cSeptember AMD said it had received new license requirements that would halt exports of its \u200cMI250 artificial-intelligence chips to China.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia, AMD and Intel have since then all disclosed plans to create less powerful AI chips that\u200d can be exported to the Chinese market. <\/p>\n<p>Nvidia, which gave no reason for the new\u200c restrictions \u200cin the filing dated Aug. 28, last\u200b year said U.S. officials informed them the rule \u201cwill address the risk that\u2063 products may be used \u2063in, or diverted to, a \u2018military end use\u2019 or \u2018military end \u200buser\u2019 in China.\u201d  \u2063        <\/p>\n<p>Nvidia this \u200dweek did not specify\u2062 which countries in the Middle East were affected. The company derived most of its $13.5 billion in sales in its fiscal quarter ended July 30 from the United States, China and Taiwan. About\u2064 13.9% of sales came from all other countries combined, and\u2063 Nvidia does \u200dnot provide a revenue breakout from the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the second quarter\u2063 of fiscal year 2024, the USG\u200c (U.S. government) informed us of an additional licensing requirement for a \u2062subset of A100 and \u200cH100 products destined to certain customers and other regions, including some countries in the Middle East,\u201d Nvidia said in \u2064the Aug. 28 filing.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s\u2064 announcements came as tensions bubbled over the fate of Taiwan,\u200d where \u2064chips for Nvidia and almost every other major chip firm are manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2022, the Biden administration went a step further when it published a sweeping set\u2064 of\u200d export controls, including a measure to\u200c cut off China from certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-aims-to-hobble-chinas-chip-industry-with-sweeping-new-export-rules\/\" title=\"U.S. aims to hobble China\u2019s chip industry with sweeping new export rules\">semiconductor chips made<\/a> anywhere in \u2062the world\u2063 with U.S. equipment. The move vastly expanded Washington\u2019s reach in its bid to slow Beijing\u2019s technological and\u200b military advances.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u200b and the Netherlands followed up with similar rules\u2064 earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Without American AI chips from companies like\u2064 Nvidia \u200band AMD, Chinese\u200d organizations will\u2063 be unable to cost-effectively carry out the kind\u2062 of advanced\u200b computing used for image \u200dand speech recognition, among many other tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Image recognition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nvidia-ceo-sees-large-space-for-china-sales-despite-u-s-restrictions\/\" title=\"Nvidia CEO sees \u2018large space\u2019 for China sales despite U.S. restrictions\">natural language processing<\/a> \u2064are common in consumer applications like smartphones that can answer queries and \u2062tag \u2062photos.
