Gavin Newsom has declared a state \u2062of emergency as two northern California counties \u200crace to extinguish growing \u200bwildfires that are threatening \u200bsmall mountain communities.<\/p>\n<p>One man has \u2063died and several homes \u2064have burned in the Happy Camp Complex Fire, which continues to crawl through Siskiyou County next to the Oregon \u200dborder.<\/p>\n<p>The Smith \u200dRiver Complex Fire, in neighboring Del\u200d Norte County to the west,\u2064 was \u200dignited by lightning. A cause has not been \u2062determined for the Happy Camp\u2062 blaze. \u200dBoth fires started Aug. 15.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Related\u2063 Stories<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/pge-cuts-power-to-8400-customers-as-critical-fire-weather-hits-northern-californias-interior-5483775\">PG&#038;E Cuts Power to 8,400 Customers as Critical\u200c Fire Weather Hits Northern \u2064California&#8217;s Interior<\/a> (8\/30\/2023)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/bright\/a-secluded-northern-california-waterfall-is-the-latest-victim-of-viral-fame-and-crushing-crowds-5483463\">A\u2062 Secluded\u200c Northern California Waterfall Is the Latest\u2064 Victim of Viral Fame and Crushing Crowds<\/a> (8\/30\/2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The state of emergency declaration will make it easier for\u2062 those affected \u200bto get help from out-of-state contractors to restore electricity in the \u200barea.\u200c The proclamations also support impacted residents by easing access to\u2064 unemployment\u2063 benefits and waiving \u2062fees to \u200dreplace driver\u2019s licenses and other records.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters had\u2064 made some progress\u2064 in \u200dboth counties but faced increased fire danger as high winds\u2063 were expected\u2063 later Aug. 30.<\/p>\n<h2>Smith River Fire<\/h2>\n<p>The Smith River Complex Fire was only 7-percent\u2064 contained Aug. 30 and had\u2064 burned 75,775 acres in \u200dthe mountains of\u200c the Six Rivers National\u2063 Forest, according to\u2062 the\u200b U.S. \u200dForest\u2064 Service.<\/p>\n<p>The fire \u2063lines were holding around Gasquet,\u2062 an unincorporated mountain \u200btown in Del Norte County \u200dwith about 600 residents.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Gasquet residents \u2064were evacuated, Del Norte County Sheriff\u2019s Office Spokeswoman Deputy Kristen Debacker told The Epoch Times. So far, deputies have not responded to \u200cany calls involving injuries \u200cor other reports during the fire, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s office has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hawaii-residents-on-maui-ordered-to-evacuate-after-dam-floods-area\/\" title=\"Hawaii: Residents on Maui ordered to evacuate after dam floods area\">issued evacuation orders<\/a> for \u200dseveral small areas of \u200bthe county, including all communities \u200bbetween Slant Bridge Road north\u200c to the Oregon \u2064Border along Highway\u2064 199. Other areas\u200c include Patrick Creek, Little\u2064 Jones \u2063Creek, Copper Creek\u200c Drainage, Coon Creek, Panther Flat Campground area, and other less populated locations.<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 30, more than 3,000 firefighting personnel were dedicated to the wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>Winds arrived\u200c Wednesday with gusts up to \u200b20 miles per hour in the upper elevations. An increase in moisture helped limit the fire activity overall.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063sheriff has also warned the small community of Hiouchi to be ready to \u200bevacuate.<\/p>\n<p>The American Red Cross \u200dhas also set up a \u200cshelter at the Del \u2063Norte County Fairgrounds in Crescent\u200b City for\u200c those displaced by evacuations.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighting efforts by national, state, and local crews\u2014including the use of drones and other technology\u2014have helped keep flames\u2064 away from the towns, according to Ryan Berlin, \u200da spokesperson with the Smith Creek Complex Fire Information Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe towns are\u2064 looking better,\u201d Mr. Berlin\u2062 told The Epoch Times. \u200c\u201cThey\u2019ve put a lot of\u200b resources and \u2062effort into\u200b saving [Gasquet].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan \u2062for Wednesday was to continue fire suppression work and \u201cget through the wind event that we\u2019re going to have today and tonight, and look for\u200b some more favorable\u2062 weather coming in\u2064 tomorrow,\u201d Operations Section Chief Tom Himmelrich \u2062said in a morning update \u200bWednesday posted on Facebook.<\/p>\n<h2>Happy \u200bCamp Fire<\/h2>\n<p>Officials are investigating what started the Happy Camp Complex Fire as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/video-wildfires-in-texas-prompt-evacuations-burn-nearly-40k-acres\/\" title=\"VIDEO: Wildfires in Texas Prompt Evacuations, Burn Nearly 40K Acres\">fire crews continued<\/a>\u200c to battle several\u2062 blazes in the area. The fires have grown Wednesday to more than 22,000 \u2063acres in\u200c the Klamath National Forest near\u2063 California\u2019s border with Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>Several small fires have erupted since the incident started two weeks ago. Thunderstorms have also\u2063 brought \u2063lightning and flames to the timber and rural regions.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063fire has caused one \u200bdeath, according to officials, as it rocked Scott Bar, a \u200dtiny community in \u200cSiskiyou\u200b County about 19 miles west of Yreka.<\/p>\n<p>A 71-year-old man was found dead by Siskiyou County Sheriff\u2019s deputies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-cori-bush-rushes-to-defense-of-very-violent-criminals-rioting-attacking-guard-in-jail\/\" title=\"Democrat Cori Bush Rushes To Defense Of \u2018Very Violent\u2019 Criminals Rioting, Attacking Guard In Jail\">early morning hours<\/a> of \u200bAug. 16.\u200b The resident was found in the driveway of his home.
