Gavin Newsom Aug. 30\u200b in opposition to existing and proposed needle exchange and drug paraphernalia distribution programs \u2063in North County.<\/p>\n<p>Along with\u200c Mr. Desmond,\u200c who represents District 5, the letter was signed by Mayors\u2062 Keith Blackburn \u2062of \u2063Carlsbad, Rebecca \u2063Jones of\u200c San Marcos, Dane\u2064 White of\u2064 Escondido and John Franklin of Vista. The only thing these programs do is further harm our communities stricken with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ron-desantis-reveals-health-status-of-wife-after-her-battle-with-cancer\/\" title=\"Ron DeSantis Reveals Health Status Of Wife After Her Battle With Cancer\">substance abuse disorders<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr.\u200c Desmond&#8217;s office, \u2064the county several months ago applied to the state public \u200bhealth department \u2062for funding to be used toward harm-reduction efforts.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter sent\u200d Wednesday, the program &#8220;admits\u2064 outright not \u2063all needles distributed will be collected. Needles are\u200d already commonly found in our parks,\u200d beaches, waterways, canyons, and sidewalks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within one year, as \u2062many\u2063 as 500,000\u2064 needles could \u2062be distributed in our region, without\u200b any mechanism in place to compel users into treatment,&#8221; the leaders stated. &#8220;By giving \u2064out needles and drug paraphernalia, we are enabling and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-county-leaders-oppose-drug-paraphernalia-distribution-in-san-diego\/\" title=\"North County leaders reject drug paraphernalia distribution in San Diego.\">implicitly \u2063condoning illegal drug<\/a> use without accountability or requirement for treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The county&#8217;s Health and Human Services Department did not immediately\u200b reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders\u200b said they wanted to\u2063 help \u200dcommunities deal with the drug\u200c issue by providing overdose prevention education; Naloxone, \u200ba drug that reverses overdoses; and behavioral health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/principal-of-robb-elementary-school-in-uvalde-suspended\/\" title=\"Principal of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Suspended\">social support services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we understand and appreciate the attempt to help our vulnerable populations,\u200b needle exchange\u2064 and associated\u200d programs \u2062are detrimental to neighborhoods \u200dand communities, and we are united against\u200c the implementation\u2064 of these programs in\u2063 North County,&#8221; according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Desmond and the\u200d five \u2064city leaders asked the \u200ccounty, state, and nonprofits &#8220;to refrain\u2063 from funding or providing needle-exchange services in our cities and communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead, we ask for your help \u2062in addressing the root causes of substance abuse, by\u200d providing prevention\u2064 resources, education \u200cand treatment \u2064programs to \u200dencourage healthy change,&#8221; according\u2062 to the \u200dletter. &#8220;We insist on\u200c providing a hand up,\u200b not handouts that perpetuate\u2063 illegal drug use.
