Elise Stefanik Announces She Is Pregnant With Her First Child\">full-throated endorsement<\/a> from United States and British officials amid a wider transatlantic \u200ddebate about\u200c outcomes of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s very \u200cimportant that \u2062Ukraine win \u200dthis war,\u201d \u200ba senior \u200dState Department official told reporters Wednesday. \u201cAnd by &#8216;win,&#8217; I mean as President Biden said, Russians \u2064leave all of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Strong Backing from the United States and Britain<\/h3>\n<p>President Joe\u2062 Biden has denounced \u2063Russian \u200cPresident Vladimir Putin\u2019s aggression through the\u2062 Kremlin\u2019s campaign to overthrow the Ukrainian government, but the White House nonetheless has been perceived as \u201cafraid of winning.\u201d Yet Secretary of\u200d State Antony \u200cBlinken\u2019s team has an opposite reputation for proposing more extensive\u2064 and\u200d effective means of support\u2064 to Ukraine, for moral and geopolitical reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need\u2063 to finish this job,\u201d the senior State Department official said. \u201cIt\u2019s in our\u200d fundamental \u2063interest to see and have Ukraine maintain its territorial integrity and \u200dfor Europe to maintain\u200c its stability as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mexico-wants-to-participate-in-restoring-supply-chain-for-chips-critical-goods-in-north-america\/\" title=\"Mexico Wants to Participate in Restoring Supply Chain for Chips, Critical Goods in North America\">largest trading partner<\/a> &#8230; [and] the most important partner, in terms of our projection of our power and our influence \u200daround the world, on global issues that span much broader than Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u200d identification \u200bof Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity with key U.S. geopolitical priorities would seem to imply a hardened determination to help Kyiv regain\u2062 control over Crimea, which Putin annexed at \u200dthe beginning of the war in 2014. The specter of a showdown over that peninsula\u200d has\u2062 loomed over transatlantic debates about war aims, as many Western\u2064 officials \u2064have feared that\u200c Putin would use nuclear\u200d weapons \u200bto retain Crimea, the traditional headquarters of\u200c Russia\u2019s Black Sea Fleet, \u200cbut \u200deven \u200cthose doubts are fading, according to the United Kingdom\u2019s top diplomat in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, Russia, and especially Putin, see Crimea as critically important to their territory. But it&#8217;s quite evident that it&#8217;s\u2064 part \u2064of Ukraine,\u201d British Ambassador Melinda Simmons, who is concluding a four-year tenure as London\u2019s lead envoy in Kyiv, told BBC Ukraine in an interview published Wednesday. \u201cWhen the international community talks about Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk,\u200b Luhansk, and Crimea \u2014 it\u200d has all blended now in the\u200c context of \u200dreclaiming their sovereign territories. So,\u2063 what sense is there in \u2062the so<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-and-uk-make-case-for-ukraine-retaking-crimea-we-need-to-finish-this-job\/\" title=\"US and UK urge Ukraine to reclaim Crimea: 'Let's complete the mission'\">-called special status<\/a> for Crimea?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That assessment, if true, would reflect a\u2062 shift in international attitudes, even among Ukraine\u2019s staunchest supporters. Blinken reportedly suggested in February that &#8220;a Ukrainian attempt to retake \u2062Crimea would be a red line for Vladimir Putin,\u201d and even former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, one of the\u2062 biggest proponents of NATO aid to Ukraine, during and after his tenure in 10 Downing Street, has said that \u2064\u201cCrimea \u200bis \u200ba slightly separate issue\u201d from other occupied territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s \u200dwhy I mentioned it in my\u2062 farewell speech \u2014 perhaps we&#8217;ll see\u2063 each other in Crimea,\u201d Simmons \u2063said. \u201cIn\u2062 my opinion, it&#8217;s just \u2064as likely as meeting in Zaporizhzhia or Kherson Oblast.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Ukrainian Counteroffensive\u2064 and International Support<\/h3>\n<p>She offered that projection \u200cin the face \u2063of\u200b gathering doubts\u200c about the prospects of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which\u200b has \u200cprogressed \u200dmore slowly than officials\u200d in Kyiv \u2062or capitals around \u200cEurope had hoped. And Ukrainian officials are\u2063 making their \u200down effort to vindicate such confidence, including through\u200d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-is-using-a-well-known-chinese-move-to-exhaust-ukraine\/\" title=\"Russia Is Using a Well-known Chinese Move to Exhaust Ukraine\">major drone attack<\/a> on multiple \u200cmilitary \u2062sites \u200cin Russia and an intensifying drive \u200cto break through\u2064 Russian lines in Zaporizhzhia,\u2064 one \u200cof the partially occupied Ukrainian regions that Russia seized in order to form a land bridge from sovereign Russian territory\u2063 to Crimea.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Having entrenched on the flanks of Robotyne, we are opening the way to Tokmak and, eventually, Melitopol and the administrative border with Crimea,&#8221; Ukrainian Foreign Minister\u200c Dmytro Kuleba \u2062said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some private-sector intelligence analysts credited Ukraine\u2063 with breaking through \u201cthe \u200bfirst Russian main defensive line\u201d on Wednesday, but \u2064other prominent analysts are withholding judgment.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cUkrainian forces very well may have breached it, but we need more evidence,\u201d George Barros, the \u200dInstitute\u200c for the Study of War\u2019s\u2062 team lead \u200bon \u2063geospatial intelligence, \u2062wrote on social media. \u201cUkrainian forces have\u200c not\u2063 necessarily penetrated the final component of the line \u2014 the Russian fighting positions near Verbove\u200c &#8230; \u200bI do think the Ukrainians will breach this line, including the tri-layered defense, in earnest with heavy equipment in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The counteroffensive plays a\u2064 prominent role in Blinken\u2019s stated determination to empower Ukrainian\u2064 officials to negotiate\u200d from a position of\u2063 strength, rather than greenlight any\u2062 ceasefire that would allow Putin &#8220;to consolidate control over the territory\u200d he\u2019s seized,\u200c and then rest, re-arm, and re-attack.\u201d The slow pace of \u200cthe counteroffensive has raised the \u200buncomfortable possibility that\u200d Ukraine might have \u2063\u201cto\u200b give \u2064up territory\u201d as part \u2063of a wider deal, though \u200dthe U.S. and British officials refused to engage in such\u200b talk this week.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The U.K.\u200c is helping Ukraine regain its territorial integrity,\u201d said Simmons, the British ambassador. \u201cThat&#8217;s exactly \u2062what we&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Blinken\u2019s subordinate characterized the current campaign \u200cas merely \u201cthe latest counteroffensive\u201d against Putin\u2019s \u2063\u201csystematic approach to \u200ceradicate a nation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s\u2062 the clearest black-and-white, good-and-bad, good-and-evil, I would \u2064say, reality \u200bthat I&#8217;ve ever seen in my \u200centire career,\u201d the senior State Department official said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ukrainian President Zelensky&#8217;s goal to free Russian-occupied land gains strong support from US and UK officials.
