Some may \u200beven consider converting salaried\u200c workers to hourly \u2063ones.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Ulman, \u200bspokesman for\u2064 the\u2062 Partnership\u200c to \u200dProtect \u200bWorkplace Opportunity, voiced \u200bdisappointment \u200dwith the Labor Department&#8217;s \u200dovertime proposal. He stated, &#8220;The DOL \u2064is proposing a nearly 55 percent increase to the minimum salary threshold. Massive increases in labor costs like this simply cannot be absorbed by businesses. Meanwhile,\u2064 automatic increases are unlawful and will set \u200bup\u200d the economy\u200b for failure, as increases will occur regardless of\u200d economic circumstances, exacerbating any problems that may\u2062 exist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ulman also warned that\u2064 the rule would result in a &#8220;substantial reduction&#8221; in access to entry-level \u200badministrative, executive, and\u2062 professional salaried positions. He added, &#8220;It will reduce opportunities,\u2063 especially for recent graduates \u200cand younger professionals hoping to \u2064begin \u2063their\u2062 careers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Sen. They stated in a post on \u200dX, \u200b&#8221;We\u2063 applaud @USDOL&#8217;s proposed rule\u2064 to strengthen and expand overtime protections \u2063for\u2062 more working people in America.\u2064 Updating the salary threshold is necessary and important, and it will help workers of color \u2062who\u200b disproportionately work in low-wage roles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Overtime Pay Situation<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), almost all hourly workers in the United States are entitled\u2062 to \u2063overtime pay once \u2062their work time exceeds 40 hours a week. The \u2062pay for overtime must not be less than one and a\u200d half times\u200c the\u200d regular rate.<\/p>\n<p>However, salaried employees engaged in administrative,\u200d executive, or professional roles \u200bare exempt\u200b from this overtime rule \u2064unless they earn below the salary threshold.<\/p>\n<p>The Economic Policy Institute\u200d estimates that currently, only 15\u200b percent \u2063of full-time \u200csalaried employees \u2062are entitled to\u200b overtime\u2063 pay under the \u2064Trump-era policy, as\u2062 they \u200dearn less than the \u2064threshold.
