His Lawyers Say He Just Went To Protest.\">citing federal laws<\/a> and international agreements\u200c that declare the\u2062 site of the \u200dwreckage a hallowed grave\u2062 site.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Georgia-based RMST Titanic Inc., which \u200bowns the salvage \u2062rights to the Titanic wreck, has organized a \u2063voyage to the wreckage. The purpose of the expedition is to take \u2064photos of the entire ship, enter its hull, and recover certain\u2063 artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>The government is attempting to prevent \u200cthe voyage, arguing that entering the Titanic\u2019s hull, which is what \u200bthe \u200cRMST intends \u200bto \u2064do, is a violation of\u200b a federal law and\u2063 a pact with Great Britain to treat the ship as a \u200bmemorial\u2063 to the 1,500 lives that were lost during the tragedy in 1912.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cRMST is not free to disregard this validly enacted federal law, yet that is \u200dits stated intent,\u201d \u200dcourt documents submitted by the lawyers\u200d said. \u2063They argued that the shipwreck \u201cwill be deprived of the\u2063 protections Congress granted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u2063 trip\u2062 is \u2062planned for May 2024. The RMST said that the\u200d purpose of the trip is\u2064 to take pictures of\u2062 the entire ship,\u200d including on the inside. The company also said that they would recover \u201cfree-standing\u201d artifacts in the\u200b debris field,\u2063 and the Macroni room.<\/p>\n<p>The RMST clarified that it would only recover objects \u2062that \u201care not affixed to the wreck itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Macroni \u2063room holds the ship\u2019s radio \u200dwhich was the first to broadcast the Morse code messages about the Titanic\u2019s collision with the iceberg.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAt this time,\u200d the company does not intend to cut into the wreck or \u200bdetach any\u2062 part of the \u2064wreck,\u201d RMST stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The RMST has also\u2063 stated that even\u200d though they\u2064 will not pursue a permit, they will work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that represents the public interest in the wreck. <\/p>\n<p>However, the U.S. government said that \u200bthey will\u2064 not be able\u200c to proceed \u2064with the expedition without first being approved for a permit, and \u2062gaining the approval of the Secretary of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>This is \u200cthe second time that the U.S. government has attempted to prevent the RMST Titanic Inc. from undergoing an expedition to the \u2062site in\u2063 order to recover certain objects.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the \u2064government similarly attempted \u200cto prevent\u2063 the \u2064company from\u200c undergoing \u200ca \u200dmission to\u200d retrieve a radio onboard.
