They are urging Americans \u2062to take precautions.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2062 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/state-health-officials-announce-first-two-human-cases-of-west-nile-virus-in-massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> on Aug. 29,\u2064 the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced that a male in\u200c his 40s was exposed to the West Nile virus in Middlesex County, a\u200b region already known to be at \u200bmoderate risk.<\/p>\n<p>The second individual, a woman in her 70s, was exposed \u200cto the virus in another part of the \u2062country. The first case of human infection was identified in an elderly woman in Suffolk \u2064County on Aug. 25, according to the agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/state-health-officials-announce-first-human-case-of-west-nile-virus-in-massachusetts---unpublished-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<h2>Protect Yourself From Mosquito\u2063 Bites<\/h2>\n<p>While the West Nile virus can infect\u200d people of all ages, those above the age of 50 are at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-alfa-bank-hoax-is-looking-a-lot-like-crossfire-hurricane\/\" title=\"The Alfa Bank Hoax Is Looking A Lot Like Crossfire Hurricane\">higher risk level<\/a> for severe disease. In about 20 percent of cases, symptoms typically appear between 2 and 14 days after being bitten and can\u2064 include fever, \u2062headache, body aches, rash, diarrhea, and vomiting, according to the U.S. Centers\u200d for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/westnile\/symptoms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. The more serious symptoms include \u2062severe headaches, confusion, muscle weakness,\u200b or paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Massachusetts DPH has offered \u200ctips for residents on how to protect themselves from mosquito bites, including using repellent when outdoors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-west-nile-virus-on-the-rise-what-to-know\/\" title=\"Is West Nile virus increasing? They also advised people to drain pools and\u200d puddles with\u2064 standing water, which is where mosquitos lay their eggs.<\/p>\n<p>People are also advised to install and repair\u2064 screens on all windows and \u200bdoors in their homes, keep gutters clear of debris, cover trash containers,\u200d and change the water in pet dishes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are\u200d coming to the unofficial end of summer, but mosquitoes \u200cwith West Nile virus \u200cwill \u2063persist for several\u2063 more\u200c months,&#8221; State Epidemiologist Dr. \u2063Catherine Brown said on Aug. 29. &#8220;We also encourage everyone\u2062 to regularly visit DPH\u2019s\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/massachusetts-reports-first-human-cases-of-mosquito-borne-west-nile-virus\/\" title=\"Massachusetts confirms initial human cases of West Nile Virus from mosquitoes.\">mosquito-borne diseases web pages<\/a> to stay informed\u200c on when and where WNV activity is \u200doccurring,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<h2>Potentially \u2064Dangerous<\/h2>\n<p>There are no vaccines or medicines to deal with the West Nile virus, which is a member of\u2064 the flavivirus genus. \u200dAbout 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms, while about 1 in 150 people \u2063develop a serious illness \u2063that can \u200dbe deadly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The death rate \u2063among those showing symptoms of severe West Nile infection (encephalitis or meningitis) is around 10%. \u200dMost severe cases occur in elderly\u200d people,&#8221; according to \u2064the CDC\u2019s \u200cwebsite.<\/p>\n<p>West Nile virus is rarely transmitted from one person to \u200banother person, as generally, mosquitoes are the primary vector.
