If not for the city&#8217;s cashless bail policy, however,\u200c Famoso may not have participated. Just days before the heist, on August 8, Famoso was\u2063 arrested and charged with felony\u2063 theft after she allegedly\u200c took \u200dpart in two other organized retail \u2062robberies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/top-doj-official-heading-to-law-firm-that-defends-hunter-biden\/\" title=\"Top DOJ Official Heading to Law Firm That Defends Hunter Biden\">court filings reviewed<\/a> \u2063by the <em>Washington Free\u200d Beacon<\/em> \u200d show. But\u2063 Famoso was released \u200bon her own recognizance on August 11, according to \u200cthe filings, allowing her to ransack \u200cthe Nordstrom store \u200cone day later.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 revelation comes as Los Angeles experiences a surge in organized retail crime under\u2064 George Soros-backed prosecutor Gasc\u00f3n, who campaigned as a liberal reformer working to &#8220;dramatically change&#8221; what he <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/district-attorney-george-gascon-no-bail-criminal-justice-reform-los-angeles-crime\/11314247\/\">called<\/a> a failed &#8220;tough-on-crime approach.&#8221; Gasc\u00f3n in\u200b 2020 \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-12-07\/in-first-day-on-job-gascon-remakes-bail-sentencing-rules\">announced<\/a> \u200d an end to cash \u200dbail \u200bon his first day in office, \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/media\/news\/district-attorney-george-gascon-issues-statement-money-bail\">calling<\/a> \u200cthe practice &#8220;unjust&#8221; and &#8220;unsafe.&#8221; While Gasc\u00f3n walked back that\u2064 policy\u200b last year, a Los Angeles judge in May\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/theappeal.org\/los-angeles-zero-bail-policy\/\">reinstated<\/a> cashless bail in the city, arguing that \u200da &#8220;wealth-based detention system&#8221; is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Retail thefts soared in Los Angeles following the \u200ddecision, a\u200b trend that law \u200benforcement officials blame on\u200d the city&#8217;s soft-on-crime reforms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s 100 percent &#8216;catch and release,'&#8221; \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/ca\/la-west\/public-safety\/2023\/05\/26\/los-angeles-county-returns-to--0-bail-for-non-serious--non-violent-crimes#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt%27s%20100%25%20%27catch%20and,one%20on%20the%20same%20day.%E2%80%9D\">said<\/a> Los Angeles County deputy district attorney \u200bEric Siddall, who \u2062is running to\u200c replace Gasc\u00f3n in 2024. \u2064&#8221;That&#8217;s basically going to be the policy of Los\u2062 Angeles County for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/14-arrested-in-smash-and-grab-thefts-totaling-340000-all-quickly-released-due-to-zero-bail-policy\/\" title=\"14 Arrested In \u2018Smash-And-Grab\u2019 Thefts Totaling 0,000, All Quickly Released Due To \u2018Zero Bail\u2019 Policy\">lower-level felonies<\/a> and most misdemeanors. You do\u200c a smash-and-grab, you&#8217;re going to be released in \u2063time to do a second one on the same day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n is one of several left-wing prosecutors who have received substantial campaign\u200b support from liberal billionaire Soros, who contributed\u2062 $2 million to Gasc\u00f3n&#8217;s 2020\u200c campaign. Gasc\u00f3n has vowed to run\u200c for a\u200c second term next year, though criticism \u2064from \u2062fellow\u2063 Democrats \u200dover the recent spike in retail robberies could\u2063 deter\u2062 his reelection bid, with past supporters saying Gasc\u00f3n&#8217;s policies turned Los Angeles \u200binto a &#8220;zombie town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These criminals are not \u2064getting prosecuted and they know it,&#8221; one former \u200dsupporter <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/14\/liberals-turn-their-backs-on-los-angeles-da-george-gascon\/\">told<\/a> the <em>New York Post<\/em>. &#8220;It&#8217;s off the rails.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Famoso is not the \u200bonly Nordstrom heist suspect with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-please-pardon-jon-woods-a-victim-of-process-crimes-like-michael-flynn\/\" title=\"President Trump, Please Pardon Jon Woods, a Victim of Process Crimes Like Michael Flynn\">long rap sheet<\/a>. \u200cThree\u2062 other defendants in the case have prior felony arrests, records show, and all three have been released on cashless bail\u2063 in the \u200bpast. This time around, however, Famoso will not\u2064 be able \u2064to\u200b walk the Los\u200d Angeles streets\u200b for free following her latest arrest. California attorney\u2063 general Rob Bonta\u200c (D.) on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/attachments\/press-docs\/ORC%20Felony%20Complaint%28FINAL%20-%20REDACTED%29.pdf\">charged\u2063 Famoso<\/a> with a slew\u2064 of felonies\u2063 and set her\u200c bail at\u200c $1 million.\u200c Gasc\u00f3n&#8217;s office told the <em>Free Beacon<\/em> \u200dit was not &#8220;presented&#8221; Famoso&#8217;s case and said Bonta \u2063is &#8220;well\u200c situated&#8221; to prosecute \u200cthe retail thieves.<\/p>\n<p>In addition \u2062to Los Angeles&#8217;s no-bail \u200bpolicy, experts \u2063say\u2064 the\u200d city has struggled to combat\u2063 retail and property crime \u200dthanks to Proposition 47, a \u200b2014\u2063 state ballot measure \u200bthat reduced penalties for certain theft crimes. Under the measure,\u200b which Gasc\u00f3n co-authored,\u2064 a thief who steals less \u2063than $950 worth of property is\u200c charged with \u2062a \u2062misdemeanor, not a felony.
