Category 4 intensity when it \u2064makes\u200b landfall.<\/p>\n<p>The hurricane,\u200b which is headed towards \u2062Florida&#8217;s Big Bend \u200cGulf Coast, was picking \u2062up speeds of \u2062up to 110 mph (177 kph) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/live-impeachment-updates-house-reconvenes-to-debate-trump-impeachment\/\" title=\"Live impeachment updates: House reconvenes to debate Trump impeachment\">late afternoon<\/a> on Aug. 29, placing\u2064 it at the upper \u2064end of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/florida-braces-for-15-foot-storm-surge-from-hurricane-idalia-5482519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the \u200cNational Hurricane Center\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NHC_Atlantic\/status\/1696723496704114915?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u2064later Tuesday that Idalia was likely to become a more dangerous Category 4 intensity \u200bwhen it \u200ctouches down on Aug. 30, bringing \u200cwith it &#8220;catastrophic storm\u2064 surge inundation,&#8221; (CIRA\/NOAA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>&#8216;Unprecedented Event&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The National \u2062Weather Service Tallahassee office \u2063said Idalia &#8220;has the makings of an unprecedented event for this part of the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To put this system into the historical\u2064 context, there are NO \u2063major hurricanes in\u200b the historical dataset going\u200d back to 1851 that have\u2062 tracked\u200c into Apalachee Bay. None. \u200dDon\u2019t mess around\u200b with this one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Florida Gov. (WFSU-TV\/The Florida Channel via AP\/Screenshot via \u2063The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;You still have a \u2063couple \u200dhours to pack up and\u2062 get on the road before \u200cconditions deteriorate, but\u200b by late tonight you will need to hunker \u2062down and stay\u2062 in\u2064 place,&#8221; the Republican governor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1696666242084376862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on X, formerly, Twitter,\u200b late Tuesday.\u2063 &#8220;If \u200cyou choose to stay,\u2063 first responders will\u200b not\u2062 be able to \u200dget to you until after the storm has passed,&#8221; \u2064he added.<\/p>\n<p>The governor added\u200d that shelters will be open\u2064 across \u2062the\u200b high-risk counties while more than\u2062 300 \u2062members\u2062 of the Florida Highway\u2062 Patrol are on standby\u2063 to escort\u200d equipment, resources, and response teams \u2062in\u2062 the wake of\u200c the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida National Guard has been fully activated,\u2064 Mr. DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2023\/08\/29\/governor-ron-desantis-issues-updates-on-hurricane-idalia-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, with 3,700 guardsmen currently in position \u2063across\u200d the state\u2064 for preparedness and response efforts and an additional 1,800 guardsmen on\u200d the way ahead of the storm landing.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has said he is in &#8220;constant contact&#8221;\u2063 with Mr.\u2062 DeSantis ahead of the hurricane touching down, \u2064adding \u2063that\u2063 his administration is\u2063 providing him with &#8220;everything he\u200b could possibly need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re worried \u200cabout the surge, the ocean\u2064 surge. We don\u2019t know\u200b exactly\u200d \u2014 hour to hour, we\u2019re\u200c watching this,&#8221; The President <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4177744-biden-desantis-hurricane-idalia-constant-contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told reporters<\/a> late Tuesday. &#8220;But I told \u2063the governor, and \u2062the mayor of the\u2062 region that\u2019s likely to be hit first, that\u200b we\u2019re\u200c there as long as \u2062it takes, and we\u2019ll make sure they have everything they need,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<h2>Idalia Now Category 3<\/h2>\n<p>As \u200bof the early hours of \u2062Wednesday morning, Idalia reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/text\/refresh\/MIATCPAT5+shtml\/300256.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 3<\/a> strength with winds of\u2063 120 mph (195 kph), according to the\u200d National Weather Service, which noted that Florida wasn&#8217;t the only state at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A northward to north-northeastward \u200cmotion\u200b is expected\u200c through morning, with\u2062 Idalia&#8217;s center forecast to reach the \u200bBig Bend \u2064coast of \u2064Florida \u200dthis morning,&#8221; NWS said in an \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/text\/refresh\/MIATCPAT5+shtml\/300256.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a> in\u200d the early hours\u200c of the morning Wednesday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After \u200blandfall, Idalia is forecast to turn toward the \u200bnortheast and east-northeast, moving\u2064 near or along\u2062 the coasts of \u2064Georgia, South Carolina,\u200b and North Carolina late today and Thursday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Idalia is likely \u200cto still be a hurricane while moving\u2064 across southern Georgia, and possibly when\u200c it reaches the\u2063 coast of Georgia or southern South Carolina late today,&#8221; officials added.<\/p>\n<p>The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia have declared <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.sc.gov\/news\/2023-08\/governor-mcmaster-declares-state-emergency-south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states of emergency<\/a> in advance \u2062of the storm\u2062 touching down and have urged residents to take necessary\u200d precautions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Idalia is expected to reach Category 4 intensity upon landfall, prompting mandatory evacuations in over 30 Florida counties.
