After more than eight years of legal battles, U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth has granted preliminary approval for a settlement agreement\u2062 that will\u2063 provide\u2063 compensation to the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement includes a payment of approximately \u2063$50,000 to six named class representative plaintiffs, \u200b$2.2 million to cover the plaintiffs&#8217; attorney expenses, and $2.6 million to notify and compensate other gun owners affected \u200bby D.C.&#8217;s gun laws.<\/p>\n<h3>Challenging\u2064 D.C.&#8217;s Gun \u2063Laws<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dc-reaches-5-1-million-settlement-agreement-in-lawsuit-over-gun-rights-violations\/\" title=\"DC settles .1M in lawsuit over gun rights violations.\">original 2015\u2063 class\u2063 action complaint argued<\/a> \u2062that the D.C. gun laws at\u200d the \u2062time prohibited residents from carrying firearms outside their homes and completely barred \u200cnonresidents from registering their firearms within \u2063the district.<\/p>\n<p>Maggie Smith, the lead plaintiff\u2064 in \u200cthe lawsuit, was a nurse who legally carried her firearm in North Carolina. During a visit to D.C. in\u200c 2014, she was pulled over by a police officer. Following the guidelines she had learned in a gun ownership \u2062course,\u200c Smith informed \u2063the officer about her licensed pistol. Another plaintiff lost their job due to the arrest, while yet another had their car seized \u200band had to drop\u2064 out of college because they\u2063 couldn&#8217;t commute to\u2062 class.<\/p>\n<p>The D.C.\u2064 government \u200dargued that the plaintiffs should \u2064have been aware of the district&#8217;s gun laws and therefore had a legal obligation to comply. \u200dHowever, Judge Lamberth, appointed \u2064by \u200dPresident Ronald Reagan, rejected\u2062 this argument in a 2021 opinion, stating that the plaintiffs had no \u2063viable options for legally carrying a gun for self-defense in\u200b D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement marks a significant victory for gun owners and highlights the importance of protecting Second Amendment\u2062 rights.
