The Belgian investigation \u2063followed a \u200d2021 American probe \u200cthat discovered 21 PFAS in paper \u2062and other plant-based\u200c straws, but no detectable concentrations in plastic ones.<\/p>\n<p>Such substances \u200dhave the ability to build up \u2064in\u2062 our bodies and cause cancer due \u2064to the level of carcinogens \u2063present.<\/p>\n<p>The study found a \u2062total of at least 18 \u2063different PFAS, of which the most\u2063 prevalent\u200c were \u200dprohibited internationally in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>These substances are also harmful to the ecosystem as well.<\/p>\n<p>These \u2062so-called \u201ceco-friendly\u201d plant-based\u2062 straws are not necessarily a more sustainable alternative to plastic straws since they can bring on \u200can additional source of PFAS exposure in both humans and the environment, \u200dfor example, \u200bafter degradation in landfills or through\u200c incomplete incineration.<\/p>\n<p>These findings were also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/08\/28\/paper-straws-worse-than-plastic-pfas-study\/70702090007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/08\/28\/paper-straws-worse-than-plastic-pfas-study\/70702090007\/\" target=\"_blank\">highlighted by USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 researchers claimed that the presence of PFAS may be explained by contaminated soil or an unforeseen side effect of\u2062 material recycling, even though manufacturers may purposefully cover their plant-based straws in chemicals to make them water-repellent.<\/p>\n<p>To ascertain\u200d the\u200d main source of contamination in the straws \u2063and \u2064how the chemicals may affect individuals ingesting \u2063them while they \u2064decompose in drinks, the authors advised for additional research and investigations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The U.S. Environmental\u200d Protection\u200c Agency (EPA) says that PFAS have been linked to: \u201cReproductive effects such as decreased fertility or high blood pressure \u2064in pregnant women, developmental effects or delays in children, including low birth weight, accelerated puberty, bone variations, or\u200b behavioral changes, increased risk of some\u200d cancers, including prostate, \u2062kidney, and\u200b testicular cancers, reduced ability of the body\u2019s\u200d immune system to fight\u2062 infections, including reduced vaccine\u2064 response, interference with the body\u2019s \u2063natural hormones, increased cholesterol levels \u2064and\/or\u2064 risk \u200dof obesity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The authors of the research also advised \u200busing reusable stainless-steel straws, since they have been tested to be PFAS-free.
