The complaints claimed that the manufacturer gave the\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/3m-to-pay-6b-after-u-s-military-claims-their-manufactured-earplugs-caused-hearing-loss\/\" title=\"3M to pay B for alleged hearing loss caused by their earplugs.\">military substandard combat earplugs<\/a>,\u200b which led to serious ailments, \u200dincluding hearing loss.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>In a \u200cpress statement, representatives from 3M stated that the settlement is \u201cnot an admission of liability\u201d \u200dand\u2064 that\u2064 it will be paid\u200c out over a period of years in the \u200dform of\u2064 $5 billion in cash and $1 billion in shares.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe products \u200dat issue\u2062 in this litigation are safe and effective \u2064when used properly. 3M is prepared\u2062 to \u2064continue to defend itself in the litigation if certain agreed\u2064 terms of the settlement agreement are not fulfilled,\u201d 3M said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From 2003 through 2015, \u200cthe U.S. military purchased\u200d earplugs from the \u200ccompany for training\u200d and battle.<\/p>\n<p>Service members claimed that the faulty 3M earplugs led to\u2063 tinnitus and even hearing loss,\u2064 according to\u200d a\u200c Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article from 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The earplugs were produced by Aearo\u2063 Technologies, a\u200b business that the company acquired in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Aearo attempted to declare bankruptcy last year in an effort \u200dto \u2064cover its debts and reduce risk. However, a judge dismissed it this summer \u2064after stating that\u200d \u201callowing an otherwise financially healthy debtor with\u2063 no impending solvency issues to remain in\u2064 bankruptcy\u2026 exceeds the boundaries of \u2064the\u2062 court\u2019s limited jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According\u200b to 3M, the deal will result in a pre-tax \u2064charge for the third\u200d quarter of 2023 of almost \u2062$4.2 billion. <\/p>\n<p>Investors anticipated the settlement to be substantially higher, according to the WSJ, which is why shares closed 5% \u200dhigher on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second sizable lawsuit settlement this\u200c summer for 3M.<\/p>\n<p>The firm also said in June that \u200dit\u2062 would provide up to \u200b$10.3 billion over 13 years to American public water suppliers that have found its\u2062 harmful \u201cforever chemicals\u201d in local water \u200csystems.<\/p>\n<p>In order to create coatings that repel \u2064water, grease, and\u200c oil, polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances\u2063 (PFAS), typically referred to as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d are utilized in hundreds of household\u2064 goods, including cosmetics and carpets.<\/p>\n<p>Following thousands of lawsuits alleging that 3M knew\u2063 PFAS caused cancer, developmental deformities, \u2062and \u2064other\u200d health issues,\u2064 as\u2063 well as that the chemicals polluted American drinking water \u2064systems, the company \u2064was forced \u200dto reach\u2062 a settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!\u200d Receive breaking news blasts directly to your inbox for free.
