The person\u2064 did not travel recently to another country, Florida, or \u2064Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaria was once common\u2064 in the United States, including in Maryland, but\u200c we have not\u2063 seen a case in Maryland that was not \u2062related to travel in over \u206240 years,\u201d Maryland Department of Health Secretary Laura Herrera Scott said at the \u2062time. \u201cWe are taking \u200bthis\u200d very seriously and will work with local and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/johnson-johnson-plans-to-seek-fda-authorization-for-its-single-dose-vaccine\/\" title=\"Johnson &#038; Johnson Plans To Seek FDA Authorization For Its Single-Dose Vaccine\">federal health officials<\/a> to investigate this\u2063 case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaria\u200c can\u2062 be very dangerous\u2063 and even fatal if it is not\u200d treated, but early treatment reduces the chances of complications,\u201d added Deputy\u200b Secretary for Public Health Services Dr. \u200dNilesh Kalyanaraman. \u201cWe urge the \u200cpublic to take precautions against mosquito bites, and if you develop symptoms after traveling\u2063 abroad, seek urgent \u200bmedical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bagency didn\u2019t disclose the age\u200b or sex \u200bof the person, more specific information about where he or she lives, the date the person\u2063 became infected, or when the person was diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect\u200d patient\u2063 confidentiality, we are not sharing any further patient information,\u201d a Maryland Department of Health spokesperson told The\u200d Epoch Times via email.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said on\u200b Aug. 29 that there have\u200d been no updates outside new information on the species.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC said that surveillance for additional cases of malaria, as well as\u200b surveillance and\u200d control of mosquitoes \u2062with malaria, will\u2063 continue in Maryland, Florida, \u200cand Texas for eight\u2062 weeks \u200bfollowing the most\u2063 recent case in each state.<\/p>\n<h2>Earlier Cases<\/h2>\n<p>Texas\u2063 authorities\u200b detected \u200da case in June in Cameron County. The person had \u2064spent time working outdoors, officials said. No other cases\u200d have been detected in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Florida officials also started reporting cases in June, in Sarasota County. The number\u200b of cases later climbed to seven.<\/p>\n<p>Malaria is usually caused when people \u2063are bitten by mosquitoes that\u2063 have been infected \u2064by certain parasites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CDC reports a unique case of locally acquired malaria in the US.
